Strong Characters & A Fast Pace
This story of female friendship had me intrigued from the first page. Chrissie and Anna are two school girl friends who are vastly different and yet manage to get on like a house on fire. Just like the way you sometimes 'click' with a person instantly - and forever. However in their case, Chrissie's chronic insecurity and jealousy drives a wedge between the 2 girls when she does something unforgivable that ends up having huge repercussions on Anna's life. The book follows the girls into adult hood as they grow up, leave school and handle their respective relationships. From school girl crushes to real adult relationships we see how both girls mature in the adult world. Will Chrissie confess to what she did and can Anna forgive her?The novel moves quickly and what impressed me most, and the reason for the 5 stars, is the ability Bond has to create compelling, fully rounded characters. Chrissie by all accounts should not be likeable so it is a sign of a very good writer that even though she has done this awful thing to her best friend, I still found myself rooting for her and willing Anna to forgive her. On top of this, after I had turned the last page I found myself thinking about the characters deep into the night proving that they felt more real than mere words on page. Recommended.
