I’ve been wanting this deck for years
I’ve been reading cards since around the age of 12. My mom read cards, her mom read cards. A lot of women in my family are spiritual. I’ve always had this deep need for connection to my past life. I have over a 100 decks and in less than 5 minutes with this deck I think I found a past life I’ve been looking for my entire life. I’ve never been able to connect to a past life in any other deck that I have. This deck is so powerful and so beautiful I don’t think I’ll be able to put it down.

I don’t think this is something to dabble in
The cards are beautiful and the book is very well written, easy to understand, and helpful in guidance. However, personally, I feel the offerings were not something I connected with. Some of the offerings were strange and things I don’t know if I could get my hands on. In keeping with the book, I wrapped the cards in black cloth and I’ve put them away - probably never to be used again. I think that in order to be truly reverent to this deck - there has to be a Spiritualism that is revered and practiced - and that’s something that is unfamiliar to me. I respect this deck and the Spirit more than my desire to use the deck.

Skeptical Critic of the Creators at First, but - I LOVE this deck!
This is my 13th deck, and it's now in my top 5 favorites to work with. I love the energy of these cards, the primitive art, and that the culture presented in the cards that gives it a genuine "second line" feel. I was skeptical at first, I admit, because of the creators of the deck. I'm familiar with Sallie Ann Glassman's work, and have been a critic in the past. However, I must say, I have to give her credit on this deck, along with Martinie. So many cultural religious practices and traditions have been appropriated by those who do not fully understand it, and those who only profit from snake oils and fakery. This doesn't exactly sell me on their legitimacy in general, but this deck is a win, accurate for the most part when compared to other's today, and I love it so much that I can't allow my criticism to hinder me using such a beautifully orchestrated deck with so much subtle symbolism hidden away in every card. I love the slightly waxy feel as well. They shuffle and slide wonderfully without sticking, but have just enough tackiness to them to not become a hockey puck. The size is perfect for my hands, as most decks are a bit too bulky and big for my personal liking, as oracle decks become more and more popular with the younger crowd.I can see though, how practitioners of Santeria, Hoodoo, Voodoo/Vodoun, Espiritismo may not totally love the mash up, but on a deeper level, keep in mind, these all share roots in the same culture and indigenous tribes of people. It would be as if creating a (humor me here) Christian Tarot deck, and having elements of Catholicism and Protestantism presented, but all living under the same "Christianity" umbrella. It's definitely a deck that one must try to have an open mind to fully enjoy, but if you can, it truly is a great deck to have if this culture and the Lwa's/Spirits presented in them align with your practice. I would not recommend to someone who is not familiar with Lwa, Orisha, and African based spirituality though. One must have at least a basic knowledge to know who the cards represent and the names of each as how they are written are not exactly the kind of research one might find through Google, but through learning from those who actually practice it. If you are new to African Spirituality, please do your homework first or you will just have a beautiful but confusing deck that you don't connect with unless you like primitive artwork. Many who love the New Orleans variety of Voodoo may be tempted to buy as if it were a souvenir. This deck, even though it says "New Orleans" Voodoo on it, must be understood that New Orleans Voodoo is not "native" to New Orleans necessarily, but that New Orleans is a melting pot of sister and cousin cultures and religions with roots to Haiti, Cuba, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, etc, which then some of was combined with *aspects* of Catholicism to mask their true practices such as with Hoodoo and Santeria. This deck is for all of those cultures and traditions, a combination of everything that found it's way to New Orleans. It's also a deck that reminds me, of all of the people enslaved who these religions and practices kept them going. Society's oppression and suppression of all the above religions/practices, didn't keep their spirits down and now it's still alive today. This deck speaks very loudly of those who persevered.I would recommend highly to experienced practitioners of this spirituality.

Better than I thought it would be...
I collect tarot decks and books and was simply adding this one to my collection when I purchased it. I had used the deck via computer generated tarot reading sites a few times and was drawn to the deck due to it's accuracy and dynamic visual energy. What I had not realized was that this is a complete divination system unique unto itself. The book is large and full of explanatory information regarding the images on the cards as well as the spiritual/esoteric philosophies inherent in the cards as expressed by any type of layout. There are several innovative spreads with suggested interpretive approaches to any given reading. The book is heavily illustrated and the cards are of good quality paper stock. It has been well worth my time to study the cards and read the book despite having been an avid tarot enthusiast and reader for almost 20 years! The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot book and deck are worth every penny!
