Shoeless Joe & Me (Baseball Card Adventures)

Not put off by the word naked...
I bought and read this because of one review that seemed to tarnish the series...my 8year old just started reading series and a negative review was brought to my attention by another mom, who hadn't introduced these books to her kids yet because of it. Yes, the main character does see a grown woman naked (accidentally) and he is in his underwear and that's that. Personally, I did n't see the point and found it extraneous, but it wasn't focused on and I can only assume was included for humor? The target audience is 10-13 year old boys after all. I can only just see her hesitancy to include in a CLASSROOM library, only just, but it's not worth disregarding the entire series over. Kids today see much more lewd humor in primetime sitcoms for sure. I should also note that I did n't notice a single reference to using the bathroom at all...not one. Overall, these are quick, entertaining reads for kids and whether it's the baseball or the history or the time-travel angle that grabs your reader, if it gets and keeps them reading; get these books!

"SHOELESS JOE & ME"..A Baseball Card Adventure
Children need idols and heros to look up to. They need to know that successes are possibleand that they too can achieve great things. Reading helps to build their hopes and dreams andenables them to strive toward goals. My grandson is 8 years old and plays little league. He loves baseball and practices to be at hisvery best. He also loves to read. The Baseball Card Adventures put him in touch with real baseballplayers who were able to accomplish great records. He is able to build his values based on thefact that it can be done and that others have succeeded before him.He loves reading as well and is in the advanced readers group, though in 2nd grade his reading skillsput him at 5th grade levels.Today more than ever our children need true hero's to look up too....these books make his goals areality........

10-year old loved it!
My son is a basketball fan and was leery about reading a baseball book ;) However, he loved the book and is now reading a second book by the same author.

good teaching tool
This book provided a great vehicle for my 6th-grader, a struggling reader, to enter a bygone time and to experience some of the drama of Shoeless Joe's story. The writing is not artful enough to get by even a 6th grader's questioning of the plot device -- a kid uses a baseball card to travel back in time -- but no matter. The story line has enough action to keep things moving, and that overcomes all.

didn't realize it was YA
I never had baseball cards but enjoyed the games before they got so commercialized. I admired the boy's desire to do the right thing and I admired the author for striving for authenticity. I'm glad he didn't use that $20! Would probably had a hard time explaining a new bill! I will read more of the baseball card books.

Superb Series For the Young Baseball Fan
This series of books has been wonderful for my eight year-old son. He can't get enough of them. The vocabulary is challenging enough without being overly so, and the stories are intriguing enough to have him fighting sleep to see what happens next. I wish there were more of them.
