Seriously, just buy this book!
The book may be on the expensive side but wow does it more than make up for it with great information, amazing photography, and it's written in a style that feels very human, not dry and clinical. The author did some amazing work in putting this together, he deserves a bit of your money. Trust me, you'll be better off with this book in your life.

Endlessly fascinating, brilliant voice
The author does a lovely job of instilling fascination with the way the world works around us in the 21st century. This book will rapidly become due for a third edition as we near a turning point in the catastrophic effects of the human-induced climate crisis. You can read this book cover to cover and it's written beautifully enough for that to be enjoyable, but also learn plenty from simply hopping around. The author also helps to give the reader a sympathetic view towards human manipulation of the natural world. For all of the romanticization we give forests and the sea, our mines and power plants get a dose or romantic treatment in this book.

A textbook I ENJOY reading
I had to buy this book for a class on infrastructure. Usually, when I read textbooks, I read them for the sake of the course. However, this book is the exception. My teacher told me that this book had a dedicated photographer for all the pictures. There are TONS of high quality pictures in this book. It is great not only for a student, but for anybody who is actually interested in learning about the world around them. I actually read this to learn by own will, not because my teacher required me to. I plan on keeping this book for a long time because it is really neat. A must have!

Great book--wish there were a volume 2.
If you, like me, wonder about mines, and trains, and grain silos, and oil refineries, and electric grids, this is the book to have: its guaranteed fun. Amazingly informative, with a warm, informal style, your only complaint will be that it's too short (one Groucho Marx-type complaint: it's also too heavy and awkward. Why can't I have a book which is longer but also smaller and lighter??). I owned a copy of the original edition from ten years ago, and immediately bought the updated edition when it came out, gifted my original to a friend.

Very useful information
I wanted this book for general use. The information is great consideration the frequency the " infrastructure" get tossed around.

It is a much better book than I imagined
It is a much better book than I imagined. I thought it was a nice coffe table book, but is much more than that. Is an easy to read explanation about the different kinds of human infrastructure, and in each one, the author finds beauty and value. It is almost an introduction to human achievement, but it does not hide the risks and pitfalls. I strongly recommend it

One of the most interesting books I've read
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the urban and industrial landscape around them.Written in a very understandable and accessible language, yet not oversimplified !

Excellent book!
Brian Hayes is such talented writer. When I received this book as a gift I started reading at the railway chapter. Once I finished that I went to the beginning of the book and read it cover to cover. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written and easy to understand for anyone even remotely interested in the infrastructure around them.

An excellent overview
If you have only one book on infrastructure, this is the one to have.It is USA centric and other countries sometimes do things differently, but not so as it is a problem. It includes lots of pictures so you an identify things as you travel around.
