Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā (Translation Series)

Gita the way I felt it should be
This translation of Bhagavad-Gita by Swami Dayananda Saraswati is a personal favorite of mine, but I will admit to being an Advaita Vedantist. When I had heard that the Gita was revered by all Hindus, I felt that I should read it. I started with Prabhupada's translation, which seemed contentious and absolutist. That made me feel that the Gita was not being given its due. When I read Swami Dayananda's translation, things seemed a lot clearer to me. Although Swami Dayananda is an Advaita Vedantist, I feel that his translation does not reflect his philosophical biases through (as Swami Vivekananda has put it) "text-torturing" to make a philosophical point. I'm no Sanskrit scholar, granted. I just feel that Swami Dayananda has given his version of the Gita a lot of care and has translated according to the Sanskrit, not according to his belief in what the Sanskrit "should" say. I also loved that I could look at the verses in the original Sanskrit and brush up on my script. If you are thinking about buying this translation, I also highly recommend Swami Dayananda's "The teaching of the Bhagavad-Gita" as a companion.

As an Advaita Vedantist I loved the clear English translation - no assumption on the traditions of the reader. As a student of the Sanskrit language I loved that there are no commentaries: I can compare the Devangari script with the IAST (Romanised Sanskrit) then read the translation in English. I find this excellent as both a devotional and educational work! I've now ordered more of Swami Dayananda Saraswati's writings!

Provides Sanskrit text as well as translation
What I was looking for was something that had the Sanskrit text (Devnagari script) as well as translation. This edition has both. The only mild surprise was that I imagined this was by the founder of the Arya Samaj, it's by a different Dayananda Saraswati.

I have read and own many translations of the Holy Bhagavad Gita, but this is both a great edition to read and study with. For those who start their day off with meditation and reflection this particular translation is good to have for true study of the Self.

Translation without biased commentary
I never write reviews but for this I will. Exactly what I was looking for as a NRI: Bhagavad Gita with English translation without commentary. The Bhagavad Gita should be read in this way only. Our guru is Krishna. If we are called to read Gita, then He will help us interpret the meaning when read with pure intentions. Jai Shree Krishna. Also, I see a lot of people commenting about direct English translation. Please remember that for most Sanskrit words there is no exact English equivalent word so the translation may appear vague; However, there is no need to worry about that because there is no way you can read the Gita and confuse dharma with adharma.
