Where's the biological evidence?
I was eager to read this after hearing about Dr. Gilbert's work in The Compassionate Mind. The idea that there is a biological connection to compassion and not just "feelings" was intriguing. However, I didn't pay attention and ordered this title that only has a foreword by Dr. Gilbert. Tirch, the author, is amiable and interesting, but it seems to have far more references to Buddhism than I wished. I was interested in the biological factors, not a system of beliefs promoted by humans that doesn't have a direct link to the scientific.I did find value in it, especially in that it explains a panic attack well enough for me to feel I'm not alone. But I have a shelf-full of books on anxiety that are much the same as this....I wanted that different understanding promised.I will keep it, and possibly share it, but it is not what I wanted. It could be exchanged with virtually any other book on anxiety and you'd not notice

Essential part of working with adults who have experienced trauma as children
I learned about this book while taking a class on DBT Exposure Therapy. I work with clients who have experienced trauma and whose lives are dominated by fear. In order to face this fear and overcome it, they need to be able to give themselves doses of self-compassion instead of self-criticism. The book blends nicely with exposure therapy and is the missing piece other books on this subject lack. It is easy to read and follow.

A must read
This is a beautifully written book. Dr.Tirch has such a wonderful warmth to his writing, which makes it an enjoyable read. He helps us to explore the many ways in which we become controlled by anxiety - even those who do not at first recognize their own anxiety, like myself, will feel the powerful relief of recognition. Tirch manages to encourage us with a practical understanding of what holds us back and encourages us with straightforward paths to self-compassion. It is a lovely experience to travel through this book and realize that words can change the world.

Excellent book! - A must read for those attempting to overcome anxiety.
Before I recommend books to my clients I read them myself. I found Dr. Tirch's book to be an excellent resource for clients who suffer from anxiety. In order to over come any personal challenges one must have a clear understanding of themselves from a variety of different perspectives and, in a sense, be on their own "team". Dr. Tirch explains how to do so effectively. I will be recommending this book to my clients on a regular basis. I look forward to more publications from this author.

I highly recommend this book for professionals and lay people
I found this book to be very helpful for me to break down Compassion Focused Therapy to clients. It is very practical , and accessible to give directly to clients. I used this to add to my work that I do with Acceptance Focused Therapy and DBT. I highly recommend this book for professionals and lay people.

A wise and caring friend.
Reading this book is like walking with a kind friend on one side and a wise friend on the other. Dr. Tirch describes in an understandable and convincing manner, the science and biology of why we are as we are. Beyond that, he provides a wide variety of exercises, practices and charts to support us to move beyond our current condition to a life with fuller and richer possibilities. I found the book to be extremely helpful and the tone caring and encouraging.

engaging, readable, practical
This book offers readers not only an understanding of Self-Compassion and Mindful Practice in simple terms, but practical and easy exercises to practice it. As a chosen Compassion-Focused Therapist, I am finding this approach to be relevant and helpful to many of my clients who had no other way to move out of their self-negating thoughts so that they could offer compassion to those around them.
