review
To begin with I thought I had the snugpak softie elite 3 sleeping bag outside in as the material feels weird and outside in like. The sleeping bag should however not be considered for that low celcius that it promises. + degrees celcius will do, anything under 0 celcius would be a risk. Have stayed indoor at about 7 or even 10 degrees and still frozen just a bit. Could not fall asleep if much below +5 degrees celcius unless wearing outdoor clothes inside it. With clothes on of course it does go way lower. The design seems nice (seems) and also durable for that sake. Packs down relatively small. Material is so synthetic that one should not wear synthetic clothes... or actually the ammount of electricity generated on your body might actually keep you warm... It seems to be a little thicker on the head part too. That part is soft. There is a small pocket inside which can be used for storing a flashlight for example. At the bottom end there are two plastic clips so it can be hung up to dry or maybe to narrow the fit a little. Seems easy to wash and dry because doesn't seem like there is a lot inside it. Also doesn't work for people above 195cm of hight (approx. 6ft4). Comes with an ajustable stuff sack of same colour. But do only consider this for spring and fall, indoor winters or half way outdoor with a lot of clothes on. Might even go for silly summers. If you like these kind of snugpaks keep in mind that there is also a four season and a "five" season and figure out that minus 5 to minus 10 in the case of this snugpak sleeping bag should be considered an extreme temperature (the level at which it should more truly state you just might survive being naked in it). The reason it packs down to the size of a large sized rugby, seems to be largely because of the thin material, two layers of polyester with a bit of something between it. It is not as puffy as it looks on the picture, not the "elite 3" anyhow, maybe the version 4 or 5 (that uses the same picture). The colour is as displayed. There is a kind of rugged padding at the end that is supposed to keep your feet warm apparently; it is a thicker material, but it is made out of rubber and hardly gets warm and is hard to warm up from body heat, however might work if you manage to do so. Couldn't tell for sure. It would be possible to wear boots inside it, which would make more sense.

So far so good
Used this about half a dozen times so far, i use a hammock and its kept me nice and warm. Also on 1 occasion i fell out my hammock drunk and didnt wake until morning, lying on the ground in just the snugpak. Was still lush and warm. Temp at the time was about 2°C.Im 6ft and just over medium build and it fits me nice. Its lightweight and packs down to a canny size.

Good but beware of the zip issue...
After some research I decided to buy this bag to fill the space in my gear of a good, lightweight 3 season bag that didn't take up too much room in my kit. The Softie elite 3 seemed to tick all the right boxes on paper and Blackleaf were selling it at a very reasonable price. HOWEVER the VERY first time I went to use it the zip stuck and jammed fast on the flap that is supposed to be designed to stop that happening!. It jammed so tight that a slight pull to free it off caused the zip to tear and break so I spent the next three nights fairly cold in a sleeping bag I couldn't zip up!. On returning home I immediately emailed the supplier along with a photo to show what had happened. Their response was disgraceful and they basically said "tough it doesn't look like a defect"!!!! what a bunch of *****!. I asked around on various Facebook groups and found that quite a few people have had issued with Snugpak zips getting caught and snagging badly so I emailed Snugpak directly, explaining that I have been a survival instructor for the past 18 years and that I knew how to close a sleeping bag properly!. They agreed to look at the bag and shortly after receiving it agreed that the zip had stuck on the system designed to keep it free. They agreed to replace the bag with a new one and speak to the manufacturing department to see if this area could be strengthened. They also sent me a Pakbox 1 and a waterproof notebook to compensate for my trouble. So, thumbs up to Snugpak customer service, thumbs down to Blackleaf for terrible service and as for the bag, well I am just going to have be SO careful zipping it up, and from what I hear, so should everybody else until such time as the bags are redesigned to stop the zips snagging so easily.

Brilliant all rounder sleeping bag
I wild camp and hike, and I bought this because I wanted a tough synthetic bag that wasn't going to lose all its insulating properties if it got a bit damp in a bivvy bag.I love this bag, it feels reassuringly tough, and is really lovely and warm. I've been down to near 1 degrees Celsius overnight and been comfortable in this. I think the minus 5 rating is optimistic so if I knew it was going to be below zero I would use my winter bag.The zip in expander baffle is brilliant, I can't understand why more manufacturers aren't doing it as it makes the bag so versatile. The outer is very tough and the lining is lovely and soft. The footbox lining isn't my favourite feature as it can make my feet sweat a bit, i understand its so you could sleep with your boots on, but I'm not planning on doing that so don't really need it.I've not had any of the zip issues that I've read about, and I think this is a brilliant bag. This packs down to a pretty small size for a large synthetic bag. I'm 6'2 and fit in comfortably with room to spare. This is perfect for the UK, as you could use it year round if you added in a liner in winter and opened it up in summer. It's the most versatile bag I've owned, and for the money it's a great deal.I was so impressed that I also bought the softie elite 5 -not had a chance to actually use it yet as its rated minus 15

Good for squaddies
Small and warm. Goes down to -5 but if its any lower a bit chilli. If you want to keep the size down and increase the warmth get a jungle sleeping bag second hand and use it as a liner in this and you will go down to -10 plus keep the size down and if wearing boots you will only get the jungle bag dirty. if using a shortback bergan this sleeping bag compresses to nearly nothing! Use the extender thats built in as its genius! It seems thin but it is warm as tested in -5 but gets cold any lower so invest in a brit army jungle sleeping bag and it adds way more warmth and keeps size down to look ally as f!
