Perfect Introduction to German
This is the second of the BBC's 'Talk' series I've bought (the first being 'Talk Japanese'). I find the series to be remarkably simple, elegant and welcoming to a beginner. The system is simple to understand, and the packaging and presentation is lovely. A nice, feature packed book is accompanied by 2 CD's in a decent box. Following a brief guide to how the system works, and an overview of pronunciation, the book is divided into 10 chapters which feature progressively complex language (Saying Hello >> Asking for Directions >> Ordering Meals etc.). Though this sounds simplistic, the way the course is structured is ideal -- incorporating plenty of useful language to learn around each of these situations. And, of course, you also get a good grounding for travel to Germany. On top of this, there are plenty of tests and activities, and each chapter works in conjunction with the CD perfectly. The bottom line is that this is about as good an introduction to a new language as you can get without instruction. It's not advanced, but the system is simple to learn from, very welcoming and user friendly. If you follow this course (should take you 2-3 months if you're diligent) you'll have no problem travelling to Germany, or moving onto more advanced lessons.

Easily accessible introduction to the language
For anyone who ever sat through a term of lessons about the correct tenses and genders of the language before even being allowed to try and speak it, this book and CD pack is a wonderful antidote. It gives examples of 'likely' conversations that one might encounter on a trip to Germany - for example, checking into a hotel, asking for platform information, ordering drinks and such. It's all presented in such a way that learning and memorising seems like very little effort at all - and the simplicity of it does wonders to aid the confidence of the learner. It also makes an excellent starting point for delving deeper into the language (I've just ordered the Talk 2 pack).Whether you've never spoken a word of it in your life, or if it was simply so long ago that it's a foggy memory, this is a great way to help you find your feet.

Very easy to understand and follow
I love this product because even though it is basic and appropriate for beginners you learn a lot of additional conversational phrases through their dialogues. The accent is very clear and easy to understand and as the units progress they make you revisit some of your already gained knowledge from past units. So it's a great way of revising and not forgetting things you've learned from the previous units. If you are looking to get a taste of the German language to help you decide if you really want to get into it then I highly recommend Talk German!
