AUSSIE BOOK WORM
I DO BELIEVE THAT THIS BOOK IS NOT ONLY THE BEST I HAVE EVER READ ON THE SUBJECT OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN OR THE PLAINS WARS BUT ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS FULL STOP. SANDOZ WROTE THE STORY WITH SUCH REALISM THAT YOU ACTUALLY FEEL YOU ARE THERE AND SEEING AND HEARING THE FACTS FIRST HAND. IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I HAVE NOT WANTED A BOOK TO END. PERHAPS THAT'S BECAUSE YOU COME TO ADMIRE AND RESPECT THIS SPECIAL MAN SO MUCH AND KNOW THAT IN THE END HIS LIFE IS TAKEN IN SUCH A WASTEFUL WAY. YOU CAN'T HELP BUT THINK THAT IF HE HAD LIVED LONGER HE COULD HAVE DONE SO MUCH FOR ALL INDIANS NOT JUST HIS BELOVED OGLALAS. SUCH SADNESS THAT SOME OF HIS OWN PEOPLE COULD NOT PUT ASIDE THEIR JEALOUSY AND VALUE HIM AS THE ULTIMATE LEADER OF ALL THE LAKOTAS.I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT ONE OF THE EXCELLENT WESTERN FILM DIRECTORS I.E. EASTWOOD, HOWARD ETC HAVE NOT MADE A FILM BASED ON THIS BOOK. IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IF THE PEOPLE OF TODAY COULD SEE HOW THESE HUMBLE PEOPLES RESPECTED THE EARTH AND EVERYTHING IN IT, EVEN TO THE POINT OF RESPECTING THE BRAVERY OF THEIR ENEMIES. SUCH A GREAT PITY THE FEELINGS OF THE WHITES AT THE TIME COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MUTUAL.PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND READ THIS BOOK.

Surprisingly Objective and Very Good
“Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas” by Mari Sandoz (Third Edition) A most surprising fact about this book is that it was published in 1942 – not a year (or era) noted for overwhelming cultural objectivity. This is partly explained by the very lengthy “introduction” by Vine Deloria Jr., which is well worth the read. Beyond that, it is a most splendid and informative relation of the peoples of the western Plains during the swan song of the Plains Indian culture. It also humanizes the enigmatic Oglala leader, Crazy Horse, without making him one of The Power Rangers”. The reader who reads closely will see the fullness and value, of the Plains culture. The reader who readers closer will see that the humanity of Whites and Reds was not so different as was believed. And the reader who reads even closer still will see the chimera of the heartbreak of Whites today as we are inexorably losing our culture and losing this land in almost precisely the same ways we acquired it. Indeed, the Great Black Father in Washington, like the Great White Fathers before him, is full of lies and Evil.

This is an accurate historic novel but has problems.
She writes as if an Indian were speaking and the result does not make it flow. It tends to bog down in the middle. It can be very boring although historically accurate. It doesn’t work. I don’t recommend it.

Extraordinary book.
Simply the best book I have read since 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee'. Completely free from personal opinion or prejudice by the author, the endless amount of facts in this book are mind blowing. It took me much longer to read than normal because each page is literally jam packed with facts that I read and reread and reread, hoping to let sink in (really, I should have taken notes when I read this book!). I can only imagine that the amount of research she conducted before setting pen to paper had to have been quite extensive, since it is so evident and well laid out there would be no other way for this to have been accomplished with anything less than some extremely hard work and passion. Much respect.

Enjoying the brilliant writing again
Have previously read Cheyenne Autumn, but that was many years ago.Enjoying the brilliant writing again. The story still causes distress but also there is strength to be gained fro how the Cheyenne were able to regain their homeland.Ihave read other accounts of the life of Crazy Horse but Mari Sandoz has such an affinity with the native peoples that you know that her words are true & meaningfull. Will be visiting the Mari Sandoz cultural centre in Chadron NE in a few weeks & I look forward to having a greater insight into this wonderfull author. while we will be in New York I intend to visit the Museum of Natural History to view the ""Ledger book of Little Finger Nail "",artist & warrior who died after the Cheyenne breakout from Fort Robinson NE.

A wonderfully written book about the history of the Native Americans ...
A wonderfully written book about the history of the Native Americans in the area of the Badlands. Gives one a reality check on the cruelty of our white ancestors against the Native American people. A very detailed account of numerous battles fought at the solder forts and what was really going on with the false peace treaties in order to steal the land that didn't belong to us and the barbaric atrocities committed against the Native peoples, the land and the animals that lived there.

Well written
Enjoyed every minute of this book, I felt I was living with the natives of the past. Crazy Horse was a mysterious and iconic figure and I feel this book sheds some light of the type of person he probably was.👍

simply great!
nothing more to add. Great author, great tale, great writing (time by time a bit figural, but hey it is a narative about non native speakers of english, it is upon a native american to judge wether the language of his/her ancestors is represented here or not).
