Hildegard of Bingen's Spiritual Remedies

A little doctrinaire, but very interesting
Wighard Strehlow has provided a good look at the writings on human health of Hildegard of Bingen, the famous twelfth-century Benedictine nun and mystic. The focus of this work is basically on attempting to understand the social prblems we are faced with today in terms of the modern Western way of life and how it fails to satisfy what he sees as basic human needs. Essentially, whilst Strehlow does directly refer a good deal to the writings of Hildegard herself, the greater part of this book by far is concerned with his own interpretation of what there things mean for people today. Strehlow certainly believe that the charatceristic remedies proposed in Hildegard's writings - fasting, wearing rough and scratchy clothing and hard physical exercise - will solve the spiritual problems that undoubtedly do plague our culture today. The tone of the book indeed is extremely modern, even postmodern, in the manner it exaplains the body's function and relates them to the way we live our daily life in terms of quite advanced science, especially relating ot bodily chemistry such as that of free radicals. However, it is fair to say that the book tends to apply Hildegard's findings in a quite literal manner that moves from its generally modern character to a very different world - which Strehlow however does seem to appreciate. He manages in a quite interesting, even thought-provoking way to link up Hildegard's work to the most modern physics and biology, as well as study the findings of dietitians very clearly. It is fair to say though, that for all its scientific postmodernism, Strehlow is very doctrinaire, at times resembling a Vatican spokesperson. However, the book is still worthwhile reading for the way in which it illustrates a very different system of understanding both physical and spiritual disorders that plague our culture today.

More HimThan Her
While I have not read the entire book yet, I am a little dismayed that Dr. Strelow has written most of the content only including quotes from St. Hildegard then expounding ideas and interpretations. It would have been helpful if Dr. Strelow has proposed a formula for understanding how the book was put together. I have trouble knowing who is speaking, him or her? The only clue are quotations.

Great for the spiritually inclined...
Spirituality?? Even if you cannot discern the spiritual life, at least this book gives you remedies so you can start, remain or advance on the path no matter where you at. St Hildegard was such a great mystic and had all the revelations of the subtelties (the healing powers of the elements and living organism, substances and much more.) This is a great book to help in the healing of your core issues, that once addressed, the suggested remedies will leave you quite transformed! For any individual wishing to involve and progress spiritually; this book is a must have! After all, be aware that you only come across it by the goodness and grace of God, sending you the guidance of this Great Saint. Enjoy the blessings and persist in your efforts that they will be so worthy!!!

True Spiritual Remedies
I liked this book because Hildegard not only lists negative forces and the physical organ that is affected, but the positive forces which can heal. Of course, this information came through her visions. The author, Dr. Strehlow, explains the natural methods used by Hildegard of Bingen to treat weaknesses of the soul. He says that psychological trauma, emotional distress and other maladies of the soul often lead to illness and chronic diseases. Dr. Strehlow has been working with Hildegard's natural remedies with patients at the Hildegard Center in Germany. This was an inspiring book for me because meditations and healing words are included along with diet suggestions.

Expeditious delivery! Thank you. I have several books originally authored by St Hildegard which have been translated into English. They are all very informative and interesting. Have not had a chance to read all; but, based on her other books, I know this one will be just as gripping! i would purchase from this company again. The book was in new condition when it arrived.

Hildehgard's "ancient yet new " guide map to Holisitc Health
Hildegard's teachings are 'ancient" and yet for our day and age,a "new way" of approachingour holistic health . Dr. Strejlow has gifted us with a wonderful translation of Heldegard's teachings.A map for us to following that Brings Body/Mind and Spirit in Balance.A treasure of alternative, natural remedies and attitudes, in today's age of "chemical medicine"There is no such thing as a 'fast fix" to balanced health. It is a commitment of attitude, lifestyle andrequires a change of heart and mind.
