Tasty/healthy alternative to chocs and snacks
These slim chewy bars make an excellent, tasty alternative to chocolate bars or biscuits and have enough fruit in them to count towards on helping of the five-a-day fruit and veg portions. As an adult, I've moved towards using them as between-meal snacks - one of these bars is way more substantial than a chocolate biscuit, but has around 70kcals. This makes them less calorific than most chewy / cereal bars, and you're not just piling on more empty carbs as they do at least have some vitamin and fruit content.I suspect they're a useful way to boost the amount of fruit that kids eat, too; much more convenient than most types of fresh fruit and more like a chocolate or candy bar in the way they're wrapped and presented. However, they probably shouldn't be used as a replacement for a fruit or veg course - better if they replace sweets or junk food instead! Also worth considering that they are quite dense and solid to chew, which means they last a while and are satisfying, but might be problematic for kids with wobbly teeth. And although they have no added sugar, the fruit content is naturally high in sugar anyway. On the positive side, School Bars contain a decent proportion of fibre -- around 6% -- which helps to make them quite fulfilling even though they seem like titchy little things when you unwrap them! I find them filling enough so that a couple will do for a light lunch if I'm on the run. This flavour is quite mild and sweet; the apple is the least 'punchy' while blackcurrant is the most intense.A delicious and convenient snack with some nutritional benefit - perfect for stopping me nibbling on crisps or biccies when dinner feels a long way off...8/10
