Excellent book for starting out
You need a book like this when embarking on learning a complex piece of software--and all GIS software is, by necessity, complex. This is a very well-written book -- fairly unusual for "how to" books! Couple of minor caveats--link to the files needed to follow along are not in the front matter (I have the Kindle Version), but rather is given at the start of Chapter Six. And the first map that you get up does not match the image in the book, but it's okay. It will, if you just continue to the "adding layers" part. Practically every step is illustrated which saves much frustration.Because QGIS is frequently updated, if, in your QGIS version, you don't find a particular menu item where the book says it is, cruise around: e.g., in the Setting Up a Project section, the Project Properties menu item is NOT under the Settings menu, it is under the Project menu in QGIS v. 2.8.1.I strongly recommend this book AND QGIS. QGIS is not the 900 lb. elephant in the GIS field, but I would say it is adding pounds by the minute. And this book will get you started quickly and enjoyably.

A General Intro to QGIS
The free open source Graphical Information System (GIS) known as QGIS is a powerful tool. But one needs to know how GIS systems work to make use of the tool. This is a general introduction to allow a neophyte user of GIS systems to get started with QGIS.It is not and cannot be an exhaustive description of everything in QGIS. No such reference exists that I know of. But this book will provide the user an excellent starting point.

Very good introductory text for those who want to produce maps ...
Very good introductory text for those who want to produce maps with data downloaded from Internet, but not so good for those who want to produce maps with their own data.

Unsecure website
The website provided for the examples in this book is fake. My browser would not open it due to security issues. When I googled it, it was selling viagra.

A Layman's Guide to GIS
A methodical, laid out lesson plan laid out as a book. Covers the basics of GIS, gives you data to do an example, then walks you thru how to make a map with that data. Nothing complicated, nothing hard. Lots of pictures showing the QGIS software, and explanations of why your are going to do what you have to do.

Well explained concepts
As new to the field of geospatial data, the book equipped me with the tools to unlock and understand different technologies used in this field and how to load different layers and even creating layers! Thanks for wonderful insights

Below Entry Level
Not recommended, a brief and ridiculously basic text that stops where it ought to start so loads of key topics left out plus no content for the UK market
