Size:1 Similar in use to a brewing hydrometer, but measures in a different range (0-100% alcohol and 0-200 proof). The use of an alcoholmeter is very straight forward. Pour a sample of the spirit to be tested into a tall glass or high chemical tolerant plastic cylinder, leaving enough space for the alcoholmeter to disperse the liquid. In order to obtain the most accurate reading possible, try to ensure that the liquid is as close to 68 degree F (20'C) as possible, as this is the temperature that the alcoholmeter has been calibrated to (should your alcoholmeter be calibrated to a different temperature, which should be stated on the meter, ensure that your liquid is at the quoted temperature). Place your alcoholmeter in the sample and spin it do dislodge any bubbles that may have been in the liquid, and could potentially cause the alcoholmeter to float slightly higher, resulting in a low reading. Read the mark where the liquid level crosses the stem of the alcoholmeter. This is your percentage alcohol by volume.

It works, easy to use
This is just as described! good quality, works perfectly . . . except that I misunderstood that the Amaro I am making is a fermented drink, not strictly distilled, because water and simple syrup is added (and many other ingredients as well)! So actually I can't use it to test the ABV% as I thought. I mistakenly thought that because it is made with distilled grain alcohol, (with roots, herbs, citrus added), that it was a distilled spirit. I did test some distilled liquor (such as gin) that I have and the readings matched the percentage listed on the bottle. It was easy to use. I found an mathematical equation to figure out the ABV of my Amaro, once it's finished.

Doesn't look as pictured, but it is pretty accurate!
Decent and accurate. Using a 40% store bought whiskey (80 proof) it read 84 proof on the scale. Using the compensation table that came with this hydrometer, it said to subtract 4.5 for temperature - so an adjusted level of 79.5 proof alcohol - nice!By the way the hydrometer does not look like the unit pictured. The bottom was not round as pictured. The unit I received had a funnel cone shaped bottom.

Received a package with Oak Aging Spirals and not a hydrometer. The label on the package stated that it was a hydrometer on one side of it, but you can clearly see through the bag that it is not a hydrometer. The other side of the package stated the true contents of the package. It doesn't seem that this supplier knows their own inventory.

Took forever to ship. And showed up inside a envelope broken! Will not buy again.

Might be off a few points, but otherwise great.
It might be off a few points (even after temp compensation), but is easy enough to calibrate with a few bottles of commercially labelled spirit. Seems like decent quality. Easy to read and comes in thin case that protects it a little better than just sloshing around in the tool bucket.

Too delicate in my opinion
I pinched through the glass while wiping it during the first session using it. A little too delicate for repeat use. A good value for someone that doesn't use it often, perhaps.

Does what it says
Not much to say other than if you want to know the proof of alcohol, this is your tool.

works great!
works great - you just need to know a little bit about what you are measuring the alcohol content of.
