Dirty
Though the product was used it was supposed to be in good condition. It arrived filthy with writing throughout it. I would not rate that as good condition.

I love this program
First note that this listing is only for the Teacher's manual. This program requires at least both the teacher's manual and the learning activity book which contains all the fluency pages and games. Also there are two excellent readers that go with this program. The readers are each a collection of nicely illustrated stories that are decodable and correspond perfectly with the lessons already taught. On this level, the stories become a little longer and with more sentences per page in preparation to read longer books. I would check both the all about reading website and ebay to see if their prices are any better than what is available here as you can find all the components of the program as a set. Their website also has placement tests. But for reference, this manual will start with closed and open syllables and end with "vowel team" phonograms such as ow, ou, aw, au. Your child starts reading and dividing words like notebook and eggshell, and in the process of moving through the program will encounter words like different, hunger, necklace and toward the end words like frowned and campground. It includes challenge words that you may choose to use with your child. I see those as an excellent way to build vocabulary as we typically define the words and use them in a sentence. For example, my child was reading withhold, scroll, embers, scamper, understate and so on. It does take longer to move on when you define all the words - but to me this is an investment in my child's education and I see it as part of my job. This program is parent intensive as you are sitting with your child the whole time as the child reads to you. There is no writing included - however, you can add writing if needed. It is solely a phonics reading program and not a spelling or literature program. It is hands on and it includes games in the activity book. Now to the manual itself. This manual will tell you what to say to your child. Most lessons have a preview of whatever phonogram, digraph or syllable division rule the child will be learning. Then there's a reminder to review words from previous lessons and then an explanation on how to help your child apply the rules. It will direct you to the activity book to do games and/or to fluency pages with the words your child needs to be able to read before moving on to the next lesson. If I have any issues is that each lesson does not necessarily mean one day of instruction. You need to use your instinct and common sense. The authors recommend 20 minutes of phonics instruction per day. Some lessons do not include anything new. They are clever as these lessons are to read a story from the readers. They include activities to help with reading comprehension as well as review of potentially new and confusing rules. For example, the silent e rule was the first introduction to using the long sound of a vowel. We were on that lesson for a week. They included 5 fluency pages and compound words like pipeline. After all that, the next lesson was to read a story. The activity book included a practice sheet for fluency, direction to teach the student new vocabulary and a story sequencing activity to help with reading comprehension. Again - you will need the readers and the activity book.Additionally they sell magnetic letter tiles (which I have) and word and phonogram cards (which I don't have). I make my own cards based on the words my son has trouble with. We practice them before each lesson and rotate them as needed.I got the teacher's manual and activity book from the curriculum warehouse from our homeschool charter school. I make copies of any word games we choose to do and treat the student book as non-consumable. A parent who does this can easily use the same two books with multiple children. The progress I have seen in my son while using this program is AMAZING.Update June 6th:We finished this program today. And I am so happy with it and how well my son reads that I took the time to write a note here and upload a picture of my son's completed chart. We didn't always do all the games. We used the tiles on and off... But I was going with my son's prompts and needs. I will be happy to continue on to level 3 in late August. For now, vacation and fun reading (and he can read!! So exciting).
