Returning initially under the name Discipline for low-key gigs & then as King Crimson proper with an album called 'Discipline' & as different from the 1970s King Crimson, as the 1970s line-ups had been from the 1960s band, the new quartet of Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Adrian Belew (Zappa, Bowie, Talking Heads) and Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel/Paul Simon), rapidly established itself as a force on the live circuit. The longer songs of the 1960s & early 1970s & the extended improvisations of the live performances from the earlier touring bands were replaced with a series of short taut songs & instrumentals imbued with a minimalist aesthetic that featured complex interwoven guitar lines from Fripp & Belew, (coined 'rock gamelan'), Adrian's distinctive vocals & sharply apt lyrics, Bruford's new armoury of electronic percussion & Levin's fluid bass & Chapman Stick lines. With 'Discipline' charting in a number of countries including the UK & USA, the clamour for the band's tours was further enhanced, often to a greater extent than could actually be fulfilled - not for the first or last time with a King Crimson line-up - due to the other time demands made on the individual musicians. Despite such pressures a further album 'Beat' appeared & charted in 1982 & when 'Three of a Perfect Pair' hit the UK Top 30 upon release in 1984, it was clear that King Crimson had managed not just to retain a large percentage of it's original fanbase but had successfully reached a completely fresh audience also. However, three albums and a number of tours in as many years, for a quartet all of whom had substantial non-KC musical commitments, strained the line-up beyond it's natural limit & King Crimson was again retired from active service, not to return until the mid-1990s. On (and off) The Road presents a complete overview of this enduringly popular line-up. All three studio albums are presented in remixed stereo editions on CD (Discipline in it's 2011 mix), as are the final concerts from each year of touring. Two further CDs present newly edited & extended takes from the 'Champaign-Urbana' sessions for the band's proposed third album & a 'making of' CD which provides a fascinating audio insight into the studio recordings. New Stereo, 5.1 Surround, original stereo editions & videos appear on the DVD-A discs. The Blu-ray discs bring full 24/96 stereo & 5.1 Surround sound plus extended video/concert footage including the Frejus concert, the Alabamahalle concert (unseen since it's 1982 broadcast) an array of previously unreleased additional concert footage from the band's 1984 Japanese concerts, along with audio only options for some of the footage. Two bonus CDs present the band's first gig as Discipline, from an audio restored bootleg at Moles Club Bath & the unreleased live album that was prepared from the Frejus tapes, with the additional recordings from that concert also included, complete the audio & visual features. With a wealth of previously unheard audio and/or upgraded audio - from the band's first to final performances, newly issued stereo & 5.1 editions of two of the band's studio albums - Beat & TOAPP, the classic Discipline album in stereo & 5.1, audio and video recordings of some of the best live shows the line-up played plus substantial new concert footage, all presented to the high standards that have been a staple of King Crimson boxed sets of recent years, this is an essential edition for the many fans of this era of King Crimson. King Crimson does the '80s.
Tragic or awesome '80s. King crimson gives us three of the most homogeneous sounding albums they have. Maybe the only three albums with the same lineup in a row ever. I have always been of the impression it took three to make a perfect pair. The studio albums have their additional material 90% of which is very good and very listenable to.There are many live offerings of full shows. 90% of the sound recording is excellent. With only two exceptions - live in Japan (disc 2 - first live show) and live at the Moles club. And it's still pretty good. The rest of the live is excellent. There is also several live video performances from previous released DVDs Three of a Perfect Pair, and live in Frejus as well as some previously unreleased single cam video footage all with excellent sound. The box set that taught me how to love '80s King Crimson.

The Definitive Collection of the 1980's King Crimson
This is an incredible set featuring a ton of music by the 1980's King Crimson, in my opinion the finest configuration of the band (the double trio is a close second). The three remastered studio discs are excellent and include a lot of great bonus tracks, especially Three of a Perfect Pair (check out Industrial Zones A, B, and C). The live material is top-notch and the blu-rays are loaded with stuff. I haven't checked out the DVDs yet but I'm pretty sure everything on the DVDs is also on the blu-rays. Of particular interest to me are the CDs "Fragmented" and "Are You Recording, Gary?". Fragmented contains a wealth of unreleased recordings, mostly instrumental and all thoroughly enjoyable. Are You Recording Gary? features a 15 minute studio session with the band fleshing out Lark's Tongues in Aspic Part 3, as well as three tracks, Discipline Redux, Beat Redux, and Three of a Perfect Pair Redux. These tracks, the shortest of them being 11 minutes long and the longest just over 15, give us re-imagined versions of those classic albums, and they are incredible. This is probably my favorite disc in the set, and that's no slight to the other 18 discs, which are all great as well. With this being a limited edition, I would recommend picking this up as soon as possible. If you're a fan of the '80's King Crimson, this set is a must-have.

Wonderfully quirky
I stumbled across the first two albums in this triumvirate when they first came out all this years agoAt the time I didn’t know that both Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew had both worked with David Bowie, but knowing that gives me another level of appreciation of their collected work hereThe first two albums are great; I can take or leave the third oneRobert Fripp wasn’t going to call this a work by King Crimson when he first got the people together as it is quite removed from the earlier prog rock stuff he’d been involved in previouslyHaving said that it is definitely still in the prog rock moldAs far as value for money goes this is the gold standard of what box sets should be like

Excellent Music!!
No need to post all of the things I love about this box as well as the other boxes Fripp has released over the last few years. All of them are excellent. What could be a little better: Amazon inspecting the item for damage before sending it out. The shipping box was mint but the box set itself was partially damaged in one corner. One suggestion for Fripp: please consider using larger font size throughout the box. Some areas have lots of empty space but the print is so small I find myself looking for a magnifying glass!!!

Definitely worth it for the Blu-rays if you haven't already bought the surround DVDs.
A bit light compared to the other Crim box sets, but still great.

WOW! When I first opened this box and saw 19 discs it was all I could do to keep my head from blowing off! A truly ridiculous amount of 80's KC music! The three blu-rays of Dicipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair are crazy good! I will be listening to this box for years to come. I recommend this without hesitation. BUY IT!
