P. T. Barnum: America's Greatest Showman

Lots of pictures and information. Also suggested: "Strengths and Triumphs or Forty Years Recollections of P.T. Barnum," Published 1873.-He traveled the country(pre-circus years) giving speeches about the evils of slavery.-He treated his "human exhibits," with dignity, respect, and good pay. "Tom Thumb" owned almost as much real estate in Bridgeport, Conn. as Barnum! Both are buried there.-He never drank alcohol.-He lost his fortune 3 times....2 burned "American Museums," and the Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. debacle.-He noted Democrats(he was an avid Democrat for years until Succession, and then became a Republican over the issue of slavery, to which he was adamantly opposed) brought in voters by rail and wagon to vote in other districts during 1851.- He didn't start his circus/traveling museum/hippodrome until he was in his early 60's.

This book is amazing. My husband had a copy and we bought another one for a gift. It's wonderful for anyone who loves history. So many interesting facts and great photographs. It is the best book on Barnum we have ever found.

this was an interesting guy. i'm kind of grooving on this book with all its images :) i mean, lots of words too -- but not skimpy on pictures.

This is a really GREAT book. Lot of pictures - I like that. This book could be enjoyed by anyone I think. It sits on my coffee table and it works really good - people come to my house - see it - pick it up - and then I don't have to talk to them for about 30 minutes.
