Bass Standards: Classic Jazz Masters Series
E**.
Transcriptions of 10 classics jazz performances on the drums
Essential for the jazz-drummers ( and others too !!! ), this book is a "Bible" for all the drummers who like Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Paul Motian, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Joe Morello and so on ... This book includes transcriptions of their playing on the "heads" of the tunes ( Billy Boy, Delilah, Fly me to the moon, Take five, Seven steps to heaven ... ), giving insight into these drummers mastery of song form and structure ; In addition, the book includes their drums-solos and drums-breaks fromm several jazz classics, with explanations of the tunes, fantastic !!! As I said before, indispensable and essential book ; Thanks again at Hal-Leonard Corporation and Amazon, Emilio ( France ).

Great Study
Great collection of bass lines to study for style, interpretation and/or sight reading for the advanced! Book was bent prior to shipping, but still readable without much distraction.

Great transcription work
Bass lines very well transcribed (note for note). Can be a very good pedagogic tool as the student can see what professional bassist actually play on the record.I don't put 5 because of the level. I would not recommend it to a beginner.

Great book.
Great book. It starts from very basic exercises on coordination and comping. Before each song a new concept is introduced (two-feel vs. four-feel, shuffle etc)

Good for people starting to get interested in transcriptions
An interesting mix of solos on here. Some are famous while others more obscure. I give it 4 stars because I don't think the Take 5 transcription is accurate enough (It's the only one I've transcribed on my own that's on here). I'm aware that recording capabilities weren't as good then as they are now, but if you look at the transcription there's a lot of bass drum notes in there that I can't hear on the original recording. Perhaps I'm wrong, but, I've painstakingly transcribed this solo and what I've transcribed is just what I hear. Whether that's a fault of the recording or not, I can't say. Overall, a pretty useful book to check your own transcriptions against. There's a brief history of each drummer before their transcription(s).

Great work
I read through this book and play along with the recordings once or twice each week. I will admit that there are pieces that are above my pay grade. My goal is not to mimic, but to learn and develop and I think this would be a great tool for intermediate and advanced players that want to improve there reading skills. True this may not be a work for novice musicians to be able to play through. As a learning tool this book cannot be beat. These are great transcriptions and it is well documented. Really advanced player may not need a book like this because the would probably transcribe it themselves.

Great Bass Transcription Book
This is one of the better books that I have come across. Some of the transcriptions are not 100% accurate, but whereas most books offer excerpts of bass lines and/or solos, this book offers complete transcriptions from beginning to end of some great bass performances. Have fun playing along with the source recordings........

Does as the tin says, great for what I wanted it for...
I bought this only recently, so I haven't sunk my teeth into every piece it covers, all the same, I've covered one of the pieces and it does exactly as it says. I bought this book to steal a few walking lines, but mainly so I have sight reading material.Someone mentioned enharmonic spelling, this is true, but understandable as the chromatic leading/passing notes in walking lines leave plenty of opportunities for this to happen. -Most importantly though, from the piece that I've covered, the transcription (pitch wise) was perfect. There wasn't a single wrong note on that score my ears tell me.The book is a compilation of transcriptions by a list of different musicians (presumably bass players), so as I go on I might find changes in the writing style, but the transcriptions seem of high quality overall. It also offers a chronological discography of the pieces it covers as well as the bassist that plays the line, the band they play with and the performance. So your transcription can be matched with little difficulty to the exact performance you're playing. The score has chords above, a nice touch is that these chords are specific to the performance as well, rather than a generic set from any old lead sheet, it also helps you see why the bassist has chosen that specific harmonic spelling at that point in conversation with the piano, which without the specific chords to the performance, could feel very strange if you start playing the lines over something like the real book app!!I recommend this book if you want some bass scores to run through and improve your sight reading while improving your jazz language at the same time. As a self proclaimed jazz musician though, I can't say this is the best way to learn a piece! If you want to learn a song do it by ear, I consider this a book of fun exercises and written language to be analysed, but not a learning tool for these standards, nothing beats learning a piece by ear!4/5 > I haven't found a fault yet music wise, but it's got a regular book spine- it flattens out real nice on the stand surprisingly, but I don't see why a book of scores would ever be published in a reading books flat spine, especially since the pieces are long and I need to turn pages 2 or 3 times a piece but it's hard with the book spine fighting against me! Also, no tablature, this doesn't bother me, I hate tabs on my scores, but it's worth knowing it's not there. All in all, if these complaints seem petty to you, think of this as a 5 star review :) It's a good buy

Okay but some bad enharmonic spellings
I have only studied one of the transcriptions properly, and even though I agree with the accuracy of the transcription against the record, It has some really bad enharmonic spellings, such as a Gb over a D major chord, which should obviously be an F# - the major third. Even though the notes sound correct, this transcription is riddled with unusual spellings, which is quite irritating and unprofessional, especially considering I bought it mainly to aid my sight reading. Even though it is a nice selection of works, I recommend transcribing your favourite records yourself.
