Eddie Taylor was considered one of the greatest of all guitarists active during the heyday of Chicago blues scene. However despite featuring on numerous hit records he never had a hit under his own name, he was to be forever in the shadow of the artists he performed with during the period covered by this CD collection. Tracks such as "Ice Cream Man", "Lifetime Blues", "Bad Boy", "Big Town Playboy", "Dimples" exude a real quality and despite them not initially achieving hit status have now quite rightfully gone on to be Chicago blues classics. Eddie Taylor never really achieved the stardom he so richly deserved he was though a very important element in the sub-genre of Chicago blues and without his presence on so many hit records would have been notably poorer. This great CD set from Jasmine showcases his early contributions and what a great guitarist and musician he was.

Outstanding Artist and Sideman
Amazingly, less than half the selections on this anthology were originally released as by Eddie Taylor; on the rest he's a sideman, which seems like a huge opportunity missed because he's a very good blues singer and an outstanding guitarist.Still, a blues lover has no reason to complain because Eddie's guitar is featured on some of the greatest Chicago blues recordings of the period.IMHO, the outstanding example of his guitar work is on John Brim's TOUGH TIMES where he plays a seemingly standard solo but adds a lot of original touches that make it stay in the connoisseur's ears--and, of course, it doesn't hurt that John Brim's vocal (another underrated artist) is wrenching and Jimmy Reed's harp on best form.Eddie's also present on Sunnyland Slim's GOIN" BACK TO MEMPHIS, arguably one of Slim's best recordings. Eddie's also on Little Willie Foster's FALLING RAIN BLUES, another blues' gem, as well as several sides by Floyd Jones, and, the cherry on top, several of Jimmy Reed's early sides, including the outstanding YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO and YOU GOT ME DIZZY.I'd say the only sides Eddie's wasted on are the John Lee Hookers, because, and this is a matter of taste, John Lee was still playing in a style that sounded better with just his vocal and guitar, although DIMPLES was a big hit 10 years after its US release in the UK.Of the sides by Eddie, BAD BOY, BIG TOWN PLAYBOY, and YOU'LL ALWAYS HAVE A HOME are outstanding and it's hard to understand why they didn't sell well enough to get out of Chicago.I suppose you could say that Eddie's major claim to fame was his work with Jimmy Reed, especially when he took over the guitar part and Jimmy concentrated on his vocals and his harp. He very likely made more money with Jimmy, both recording and touring, even though the guitar on Jimmy's numbers was basic and must have been boring to play for such a creative player. All in all, this is a CD every fan of Chicago blues should own and deserves 5 stars!

INDISPENSIBLE CHICAGO BLUES
Even the Stones on their most recent outing paid tribute to Mr. Taylor on their Blue & Lonesome release. I'd recently come across a few blues collections that included Eddie Taylor (Big Town Playboy & Stroll Out West) & work he'd done with Jimmy Reed & John Lee Hooker. But this cd gives Eddie Taylor an overdue salute in presenting all of his singles, sessions with Sunnyland Slim, Snooky Prior, Reed, Hooker & others. The sound is straight mono & uniformly excellent throughout. The playing time clocks in at over an hour & you suddenly realize that Taylor should've been a house hold name like his former boss (Reed). He was deserving of that kind of recognition. His guitar style was straight up Chi-town blues & his style is woven into so many recordings that made those recordings essential listening. He is in the same league as say Hubert Sumlin, Matt Murphy, Earl Hooker and so many other session men that made magic happen once the tape machine was rolling. The next time you dust off your Jimmy Reed or J Lee Hooker, take a peak at the LP credits & you'll see the name of the guy that put his stamp on all of em.

Great song selection but it sounds like it was remastered by Helen Keller
Great song selection but it sounds like it was remastered by Helen Keller. The volume on many of these tracks is terrible and part of remastering is to make the volume on different tracks compatible.

Superb early electric blues!
Excellent early electric blues compilation featuring the not so well known Eddie Taylor. Best known for his session work but was also an accomplished solo artist. Great collection with excellent sound quality. Recommended!
