Doctor Who: Resolution (DVD and Blu-Ray)

Please, folks, review it when it comes out.
Yes, I put a five, in contradiction to my title :) -- it could be a three or four for all I know. I have yet to see many truly poor specials in my time as a fan, so I doubt lower, but, should such a thing come to pass, so it is; like others, I put a five simply to whittle down the anti-13th Doctor moves this actor attracts. As said by my betters, transitions to new doctors can be hard. My favorite is still Mr. Capaldi; but Ms. Whitaker is a fine, fine actress, a worthy heir to a great role -- in a great series.

It is a commercial!
Really!! I know I did not look at the time but I assumed it was a special just like they always have on Christmas. So I paid for $1.99 for a minute of Dr. Who cast saying Merry Christmas! Most people have the decency not to charge you to tell you Merry Christmas! Very disappointed!

A more "family" Doctor
Pre-review note: Skimming reviews, it does seem that most negative reviews are people who did not understand that they purchased the "season," which means they get access to the episode when it comes out. I don't think that's a reason for a negative review, but maybe Amazon can do a better job of conveying that to their consumers. Now, for the actual review: Other than my confusion about how "their descendants" are guardians when they went to isolated parts of the world on their own, I really enjoyed this episode. I miss the Christmas theme that's become tradition, but things change. One of the themes in this season is a family, and that's clear in a Doctor and in story lines that reinforce the importance of family and family-like connections. That theme is strong in this episode too. Rather than the isolated Doctor (emotionally distant), this Doctor seeks out a family-like dynamic. To me this makes sense as Capaldi's Doctor embodied the growing isolation of the Doctor, and this Doctor has regenerated out of that desire to not be isolated anymore---even her companions have family connections that are addressed.Like all new things, I have my hesitations at moments, but overall, I've grown to like this Doctor and the differences this regeneration has brought to the show.

just paid $3 for something that I thought was an episode.
don't waste your money, this should be free, not $3. I am currently trying to figure out how to get my money back.

hahahaha....how about.....
you write an actual useful review AFTER the show is actually released at New Years?

This is a trick - do not order it.
It looks like it's the Christmas special, but it is a promo with Christmas wishes. Yeah, All I want for Christmas is to get ripped off.... Amazon should refund to everyone who bought this by mistake because of deceptive advertising.

Was not disappointed
Wish it was a traditional Christmas special but was still everything you would expect from The Doctor

only 2 minutes?
I paid $4.99 for 2 minutes of video??? Nice video, but, really? I thought this was to be the new year's special.

Superb!
I've loved this series of Doctor Who from the beginning. Some duff episodes, sure, but the visual quality is great, as is the music. The performances, specifically Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor and Bradley Walsh as Graham, have also been top-notch. This New Years special seems to be as near to a Doctor Who movie as we might ever get. Some great action and suspense scenes. And the Dalek was, I thought, very scary and intimidating and proves that the show should use some more established monsters in the next series - perhaps with some new twists to them to keep it fresh.

Getting the New Year off to the right start.
After a consistently enjoyable Series 11, we now have the New Year special, which will likely be the only new bit of Doctor Who we see on TV this year. Series 11 was undoubtedly divisive (though nowhere near as bad as many "critics" from the YouTube cesspit will have you believe), and while I really enjoyed it, for those left a little underwhelmed, you may enjoy Resolution more. Not only does it feature the return of the Daleks, it is also a fair bit more action-oriented with blockbuster ambitions. It's a really fun special, free from the restrictions previous specials set at Christmas have had, and a great hour of television. Exactly why Resolution has been released separately from the Series 11 set isn't clear and feels quite unnecessary really. There is also another disappointingly small selection of bonus features included, save for a couple of very brief looks behind the scenes and a feature looking back on Series 11. Anyone else miss the days of Doctor Who Confidential? But still, this is a very solid, fun instalment of the show and one I'd definitely recommend.

Resolution of the Daleks
Jody Whitaker's first season as the Doctor was (mostly) great. But fans moaned that there weren't any returning villans. When i first heard that this was Chris Chibnall's intention, i thought good on ya, make it your way! And then i sat through an entire season without one, single, returning foe... And yes, it did feel like something was missing. So, on top of changing the broadcasting day from Saturday to Sunday, the new production team changed the traditional Christmas day special to this New Year's Day special (get it? New Year's Resolution?), and Chris gave in and gave us at least one Dalek. And ultimately the best and most original dalek story since 2005. It is true, as Steven Moffett once said "the new doctor doesn't really feel like the Doctor until he's (sic) faced the Daleks", well now Jody very much IS the Doctor. A cracking story!

Fitting and thrilling New Year Special
It would have been nice for this special to be included in the series pack that I got, but it wasn't. However, having seen it, that is not so important. Resolution was the New Year's Day special for 2019 and quite excellent from start to finish. All specials it seems focus on the Doctor's ancient old enemy, the Daleks, not surprisingly I suppose and once again, they provide a great opportunity for an hour of thrills, fun scares and excitement. However, another little twist in character develop turns up, featuring an appearance from someone in Ryan's life, (no spoiler, you can find out for yourselves!).I thought the story moved along at a cracking pace and there is some heartfelt drama besides too, apart from the deadly enemy they are up against. The special effects too really are amazing. This Dr Who really has come a long way since the phenomenal revival and long gone is the cheap, but imaginative show that was produced on the tiniest budgets. It still has great imagination, but it also has incredible production values these days. There isn't really a lot more to say about it without giving things away, but I can say that this was a fitting New Year special and well worth having as a separate dvd.

It's the doctor. What more can you say.
First, I will admit that I have not looked at the DVD yet as I saw it on BBC at the time.I found it most enjoyable just as I have always done in the past with all other Doctor Who stories, regardless of who was the doctor. Contrary to a lot of complaints I am very impressed by Jodie Whittaker in the part.My only gripe, and this is concerning the way the doctor stories are being handled now, is how Chris Chibnall is running the show. There are so many things wrong since he took over.First. Reducing the number of episodes from 12 to 10 in the seasons.Second. Changing the Christmas episode from Christmas Day to New Years Day.Third. That WAS the only episode shown in 2019.Fourth. How many people noticed that the New Year episode shown last week wasn't really a New Year episode at all.It was the first part of the next season. So you have two ways of looking at it. You can think of it as part one of the season and therefore there WAS no special New Year episode. Or you can look on it as the New Year episode which means there are only 9 episodes in the season. So, first, it was reduced from 12 to 10 in the last one. Now it's 9.Fifth. He has said all future episodes will be stand-alone episodes. There will be no stories over several episodes or cliffhangers.Personally I loved when a story continued throughout the season. There was the first season when Matt Smith started and he met Amy as a child who was worried about a crack in her bedroom wall. That crack was part of the story line throughout the whole season. Then there was the wonderful season when Amy and Rory's baby was gone, River Song there in it, and all the twists and turns and revelations that came out through that season from beginning to end. Can't say too much in case I spoil it for anyone who hasn't yet seen it.There were many other stories like that in Matt's time, in David Tennant's time, etc that were very enjoyable.I feel Chris is making changes and decisions that are not favoured by the countless Doctor fans out there. There's an old saying "If it's not broke, don't fix it".But as regards Jodie Whittaker playing the part, don't be put off by all the negative and insulting remarks made in the comments on Amazon. If you haven't seen her, then get Resolution and the season before it and make up your own mind. You might be pleasantly surprised.
