Go see it old chum!
I was 9 years old when I first saw a poster in the foyer of an old colonial picture house of Sally Bowles draped across a chair in her skimpy stage get-up. I was smitten. Didn't get to see the film until many years later but was surprised it really was as daring and provocative as that poster suggested to me back then. Cabaret is one of the all-time greats from that dazzling period in 1970s American cinema; The French Connection; Catch-22; All the President's Men; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest etc. It's pretty clear-eyed in its portrayal of desperate Weimar boho decadence and on the relatively ridiculous nature of the brownshirt threat at that time while being laden with foreboding imagery signalling the carnage to come. Plus it's a riot; the routines are brilliantly set up and leave you with the giddy feeling of all the good and the bad of an actual experience, Liza is mesmerizing as the self-deluded but hugely charismatic Sally and Joel Grey is clinical in not letting the audience off the hook. Bob Fosse's fantastic film will always be relevant.

CABARET DVD REGION ONE
This review is more about the DVD presentation than the film. Why, in this day and age, does a classic film like this get presented with a surround of black bars, making the picture unecesasarily small (If enlarged I lose some subtitles, more on that in a mo.). Given the size the picture quality is perfectly acceptable, with good colour and sound. Now....On ALL my copies...NO MENU...So I have to fiddle around on my remote to find them. It works, but can take up to a minute and meanwhile, titles are moving on, so I rewind back. This isn't by any means the only DVD with no menu, though luckily not that many in the scheme of things....The film remains one of my all time favourites. Moving, funny, terrifying ("Tomorrow Belongs to Me"), sexy and with a steamrolling, powerhouse performence from Ms Minelli in the role she was surely born to play. Directed beautifully by Fosse this must be his greatest achievment?? (Discuss!). A film that reminds us of the horrors of Nazi Germany, locked into 3 love stories that still move me. Love it (You guessed that didn't you!) 5 stars and I am sticking to that, but 2 for the poor DVD presentation

Loads of extras. A classic that hasn’t aged
I’m not keen on musicals, but I’d forgotten how good this film really is. There are some outstanding performances as Michael York explores both Berlin and the seamy side of life, falling in with Liza as club performer Sally Bowles. The backdrop is the rise of the Nazis and there’s an ever increasing sense of menace, ably depicted by Joel Grey as MC.This special edition comes with a bundle of extras and at pence for a very good, used, it’s a steal. Brilliant film that’s lost non of its relevance and I’ll watch it again.

I nonetheless love this glitzy
Although the storyline differs from the stageplay, I nonetheless love this glitzy, brash, raunchy, sleazy colourful musical that has so much iconic moments within it. From well known sings such as "Money" to "Mein Herr" and "Cabaret", the momentum never slows or shudders from beginning to end.Showcasing Liza Minelli at the peak of her talents, her Oscar was richly deserved, aswell as Joel Grey's scene stealing, compelling but creepy Emcee. To compliment this, the choreography and direction are first rate.Do to the risque nature of the plot, one may not care to watch it with Granny or the Vicar!

A pure masterpiece
One of my top ten favourite films of all time that I never tire of watching. It has never dated and Liza is incredible, nobody could ever play Sally like she does.Everything about this film is amazing.I am not a musical fan but the songs and routines just add to the whole decadence of the storyline which is disturbing and fascinating in equal measure.A pure masterpiece and I just hope nobody ever dares to remake this film because nothing will ever match this.

Superb hd transfer for maybe not Fosse's best film, yet a sometimes genious approach to such a dark period
Great idea and great direction but the film is not always at the their same level.Bob Fosse, whom I love, has done his best in Lenny and All that Jazz. Here he alternates some great scenes with some more selfsatisfied ones which, in my opinion, make the film lose his initial charm, letting a tendency to bizarre and extravaganza prevail.Fortunately you can still see the art and provocative style of Fosse, who basically talks about the rise of Nazism seen from the artistic perspective of people from the showbiz and in a way that reflect their different sight: that of musical and entertain, like a tragic ball or a surreal funeral party, celebrating the death of joy and western civilization as violence prevails.Worth noting the superb blu ray and visual quality
