Dont buy this
It certainly is bright but otherwise was designed to be disposable a one use item. Why. Well fitting the battery door back on bent the battery springs and sheared the plastic nubs off the centering post. Have to duct tape it on. Very poorly desgned battery compartment, difficult to close and wrecks the battery door when trying to close. Bright light but a waste of money. Don't buy. Theres a card in the box that says to contact the company if there are any problems, but for the time and going to ups to ship back, this product just isnt worth it. I will go to hardware store for something better in design.

Very pleased with brightness and size.
Bought these to replace two 10-year old Coleman battery powered lanterns that required eight D cells each and were not that bright because they used mini florescent tube bulbs. These LED lanterns are so much brighter, take just four D cells, and are still decent sized (i.e., not too small). Don’t know about battery life, but that’s not an issue, these are for power outages (light while my generator gets fired up), and not for camping.

VERY bright light on highest setting, but battery life only a few hours using rechargeable NiMH
I use adaptors that take 3 AA batteries per D-Cell, so 12 total AA's, and while they gave off VERY bright light on the highest setting, they were noticeably dimmer after only 3 hours, about equivalent to the "Medium" brightness setting. There are 4 brightness settings, and using the 3rd highest setting, "Medium", did give a lot longer life, well over 8 hours before becoming noticeably dimmer. This does not seem to be a lantern that will take a beating or too much rough use, but with prudent handling should last a long time. Can't yet rate the longevity of the LED array, but the unit I received worked fine.

Stop deliberating. This is the one
Bought my first of these lanterns when it was called "Yeti" vs "Monster" - I can imagine why the name changed! I bought the second and am equally delighted with it. These lanterns have 3 settings and the brightness can be set for the need. Super bright on the highest setting is perfect for that walk from the campsite to the campground bathrooms in the middle of the night. Hang it on a tree limb or on the picnic table to see everything your cooking, eating or reading. Your batteries last forever (I do take them out of the lanterns after every trip). My first lantern has used the same batteries for a year and counting. IF you are wondering about the right lumens, the right features or the right durability - STOP! This is your lantern!!

Broke immediately
Was putting batteries in about 30 minutes before I left immediately and the lamp broke IMMEDIATELY leaving me stuck without a lantern for a week. Terrible quality.

Great lantern
Great camping / emergency lantern. Light weight, portable. For size and weight constraints they could have made it a little smaller for the ease of putting in a pack. Not sure on battery life, have not run it to it's full potential yet. Great little light for the money. Wish they would have choose another battery besides D cell.

Perfect for our purposes
We wanted lamps that took regular batteries to use for emergency lighting when the power goes out and that could be hung up if needed. This lamp has 2 hooks, the main carry handle and a smaller one that pulls out of the bottom. Bright enough. The 1,000 watt seems like overkill. And it can be dimmed several levels.

GREAT LANTERN!
Live in the mountains and California. Between the brownouts and the power outages in the California Gold Country, lanterns are a must. Went through 1 brownout in the 8 weeks I have lived here and am told there will be power outages this Winter due to snow. Feel comfortable having a couple of these lanterns.
