More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

My son was ahead developmentally in every way. He pointed, made eye contact, was very social, ran by 11 months, put simple jigsaw puzzles together, and asked for what he wanted. When he was about 18 months old, he 'lost' all of that. He seemed to be in his own world, completely stopped speaking, didn't point any more, made no eye contact, preferred to be alone, seemed dazed, and didn't seem to hear anything any more. Being a divorced mother of two with limited resources, I didn't know where to turn for help. When he was diagnosed with autism 8 months later, I was devastated. How could I bring my precious little boy back into my world? Would he ever speak again? I couldn't afford therapy. That's when I found this book. 'More Than Words' was very easy to understand and implement immediately. My son is 6 years old now. This book has helped me bring him back into my world. Every day I still continue to see improvements in all aspects of his communication as I continue to use this book. He is using sentences now, points, and can ask for things again. The book is written in such a way that it can be used as your child grows and advances. I will continue to use it for years to come. If you only buy one book to help your child with communication...make it this one. It has truly changed our lives!

My son is currently in speech therapy, and I had been doing a lot of improvised activities to encourage my son's speech and comprehension. I stumbled upon this book in a google search. I've had it for about a week, and have already seen improvements in my son's speech and comprehension by applying the tactics outlined in this book.Before reading this book, I wasn't really sure exactly what type of speech delay he had, or what the future held for us. This book definitely outlined the types of delays that are typical and how to get them to the next level. Before this book, I didn't even understand what the next level would be. I knew conversation was a goal of ours, but it just seemed in the the distant future. Now we have attainable goals and methods to get there.My son has not been diagnosed with autism, but he fits the descriptions in this book. With the help and suggestions in "More than Words," my son has already started expressing ideas that he wasn't last week. I also recommend the "action" flash cards advertised on amazon as well. The photos are bright and colorful - and my son loves them!I would recommend this book to anyone with a child with a speech/comprehension delay.

This book arrived in nearly new condition. It’s an excellent manual for encouraging communication in young children. Great for parents and professionals alike.

This book has some great information that you can use in therapy...as well as great explanations/ideas for parents to use at home. They're functional and easy to incorporate into everyday routines. You can also photocopy pages to give as handouts (citing the source of course!)

Wonderful book. Learning and continuing to learn so much from it. Wish it was translated into other languages. My mom could definitely use a Chinese version!
