Another amazing gem of a novel...
I've become a pretty huge fan of Shirleen Davies having read the other two books in this series. The amazing thing about her work is that each novel is just as gripping, just as addictive as the last. Her writing doesn't go stagnant, indeed she writes with all of the skill of a wonderfully descriptive and engrossing storyteller, and in her work I get the sense that she writes with glee, that she enjoys what she does and that joy just leaps out from her books."Harder than the Rest" is truly a testament to this sentiment. Chock full of multidimensional, flawed yet interesting, smart and savvy characters, an exciting plot, and, of course romance that could melt the most hardened of hearts, Miss Davies has once again presented the world with a true gem of a novel. Will, if possible, was even more stubborn than his brothers! But we don't hold that against him. In fact, in a lot of ways his strong will is admirable. He, at his core, is one of the good ones. Exactly the kind of man you want in your corner. And Amanda is everything I want to see in a female protagonist and then some. It is so refreshing to see a woman written who could hold her own, who is just as intelligent and resourceful as the men who surround her. It is something that is seriously lacking in a lot of literature, unfortunately. But Miss Davies clearly knows how to build a character, ones that don't delve into stereotypes or generalizations, and for that she has my deepest admiration. The end of the book was action packed and exciting, but I wont spoil it by revealing it - just know that you're in for a breathtaking adventure!Such a great book, I highly recommend it, and its predecessors. I can't wait to read more by this author!

Three Down...
I am loving this series. After reading Tougher Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain) , and Faster Than The Rest (MacLarens of Fire Mountain) , I was really looking forward to his one, and I was not disappointed. Harder Than the Rest was just as good.In this one, Will MacLaren, who is one of the youngest two brothers in this family, (the other youngest being his twin) is seeking revenge. His pregnant wife was murdered by a gang of men who he has been hunting down one by one. There is just one man left, and everyone thinks that he is already dead. Everyone except for Will. He is sure that he is alive and has taken on a new identity. He thinks that he is hiding in the town of Cold Creek, Colorado so he goes there to either kill him, or bring him in to be tried and hung. But first, he has to prove that he is who Will thinks he is. So, Will takes a job as a ranch hand on the ranch right next to the one his suspect works on in order to watch him and gather evidence. But, when he meets Amanda, the ranch owner's daughter, he starts getting distracted from his mission. What follows is a story of mystery, adventure, and romance.I loved this as well as the other MacLaren books, and I can't wait for Stronger Than the Rest which is set to come out early next year.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good old western, or romance, or a little bit of both.

Harder Than The Rest
Will MacLaren, one of the MacLaren brothers from Fire Mountain, is a bounty hunter. He started his hunt five yrs. ago after his pregnant wife was murdered and he nearly died during the attack on he and his wife. He has tracked down all but one man, Chet Hollis, who he had heard was in Cold Creek, Colo. His hunt for Hollis leads him to the Big G ranch where he takes a job while biding his time to get Hollis. The ranch is currently run by Amanda Taylor while her parents are away. Will gets involved in trying to find out who is stealing cattle from the Big G and prevention of theft of valuable horses from the ranch. He doesn't want to be involved in these matters, the same way he doesn't want to be involved with Amanda. But she is the first woman in five yrs. that has moved him emotionally. Amanda knows that Will is a loner and drifter, he will leave one day; she knows he has something in his past driving him but he avoids personal relationships with everyone on the ranch. Even with his pushing her away, she is pulled toward him.

Hard to put down
The “MacLarens of Fire Mountain” series continues with the main focus being around Will as he pursues one of the men responsible for killing his Emily and unborn baby. He keeps a great deal of distance between himself and his family, and isn’t the slightest bit interested in other women. All that changes around Amanda, as their attraction for one another soon becomes too difficult to ignore. All of the MacLaren brothers have something that make them both interesting and lovable, and Will, even though he appears to be cold and recluse at the start, is no exception. When he does finally come around, it couldn’t be at a better time as he will need help against a murderer who has no concept of mercy. With lots of tension and stakes to be had, “Harder Than the Rest” is a great continuation that is hard to put down.

Captivating and Engrossing
Will MacLaren has one thing on his mind. Revenge. After several fruitless years of searching for his wife and unborn child's killer, when he finally comes across the lowlife in question, he can't wait to pull the trigger.Amanda Taylor is the feisty and proudly independent daughter of a Colorado rancher. When Will lands on her doorstep, she wants the chemistry that flows between them about as much as he does - not at all. Both are determined to ignore the passion that sizzles between them until a horrific night where Amanda and her family are held hostage by cattle rustlers and Will's brother gets shot. Even then, the path of romance is far from easy. Both have their own lives to lead and their own responsibilities, the question is: can one of them learn to compromise?Another captivating and engrossing read by Ms Davis - can't wait to read about Drew's adventures in the forthcoming book!5 Star Read!

Another enjoyable McLaren story
Will McLaren has been hunting his wife's murderers for five years and at last thinks he has found the last one. Amanda is looking after her parents' ranch and is having trouble with rustlers when a new ranch hand shows up. Will now has to divide his time helping Amanda and tracking the murderer. He definitely does not want another romance. All the McLarens are involved somewhere in the story and I like to see the links from previous books.

Justice rides in on a horse
Geez this is brilliant. Opening descriptive scenes be warned are devastating. Hard hitting they left me in tears and placed me in an empathetic situation that I understood Wills drive for vengeance. A thrilling story of love and the strong bonds of this family that just keeps giving and extending. Highly recommend this series.
