A Kid-friendly Programming Book
I found this free ebook in Amazon and thought this could add to the knowledge of my 13-year-old techy son.Java Programming for Kids is a step-by-step guide on Java programming. It serves as an introductory lesson to kids who are interested in exploring the world of programming at an early age.I read the first chapters of the book before deciding that my son won’t find trouble in digesting whatever is written in the book. I couldn’t help but admire R. Chandler Thompson for writing this college-level lesson into an understandable grade-level tutorial book. The author used a kid-friendly language in discussing the concepts and processes of Java programming. Good job Mr. Thompson!I am happy that my son has found a kid-friendly book as a starting point in achieving his dream to become a programmer. He is enjoying his weekends trying out the exercises in the book. Also, I like how the author relates the Java concepts and programming processes in real life situations. It did not only make the concepts easier to understand but it also enlightened my child and me as to how complicated topics can be broken down into simpler ones.It would have been better if the author had made sure the codes were presented line by line for a cleaner reference. Other than that, I wish the author had provided more illustrations as reference and more exercises to practice.I highly recommend this book not only to kids but also to adults who would like to learn Java programming in their own pace. What are you waiting for? Grab a copy of this promising book for an in-depth understanding of Java programming.

Java projects for the clueless parent
Kids pick up programing quickly. The problem is, they learn how to do things, but they don’t always understand how they did it. Recently, after reworking a java script game in an open source course the question was asked, “how can I make my own program?” I was asked to “Help” figure out how they could actually do their own game from scratch. Let’s start out by saying, there are a lot of resources on JAVA, but I don’t have the time or the patience to wade through a five inch thick manual when what I need is a more straight forward presentation. This book was definitely what we needed. First, like the open source course, it was focused on creating something specific – an interactive calculator – second it offered solid foundational information that could be used to work on other JAVA projects. My advice is as follows, 1) get this book 2) read it 3) give it to the kid and have them read it. 4) go do something else while they program. This way you have a clue what’s going on and they have a good resource to use as they learn.

Must Buy
The world today is way more advanced than what we had seen or may be what we even know. I had bought Java Programming for Kids for my 13 year old nephew and trust me I have downloaded all applications mentioned in this book and am planning to go ahead with advanced study of Java. My nephew, at just 13 years is better than me at gadgets and is addicted to them. My intention of buying this book was to push him a little further to help him excel and utilize his hobby and it is working. He is doing something which I’ve no clue about but I am that every kid now has ideas and can and should know Java programming and I am sure they’ll surprise us with the show they’ll put up soon. My nephew has now demanded to join some classes for Java programming and I am a proud uncle. This is a MUST BUY & GIFT if you have a child who you think will understand and you too can use it at whatever age and experience to learn something new, trust me it’s addictive.

A bad format spoils the learning
I develop software and I've taught computers to kids. This book will be OK for the kid that's very driven to learn, but it's format has a number of issues that will make most kids uninterested.First - the paperback format doesn't fit the book. The typical conventions used to separate example code aren't followed, and the narrow paperback pages don't let the lines fit together making it difficult to read. Font choices are bad, making some sections hard to separate from the text.Next - This isn't going to succeed for a kid to LEARN about java at a kids level. This will let the kids type in the program in the book and make things work, but the typical 10-12 year old isn't going to understand the discussion about the data types as it's set up. A longer format and diagrams would give kids some mental images to work with. Finally, as with any Java environment, this book must tackle the often oppressive installation and command line bias required. It's entirely correct, but for parents hoping to give their kids a way to experience programming, it presents a high barrier to entry. The short format of the book doesn't allow for a description or quick reference for when things go bad.

Decent book but code printed in a ridiculous font
It's not a bad beginning book, but seriously, what's the deal with printing the code in what looks like Times Roman? Seriously, couldn't they have used a non-formatted text like courier just to make it easier to follow for new programmers? I found the steps to setup the Path a little confusing for new coders and could have been made a little more clear. Additionally, more clarification about running JAVAC vs. JAVA could have been helpful. I've got some Java experience so I worked with my son on this and had to explain some of the more confusing aspects of the book. But otherwise it's a fair introduction.

Finally... Java Programming even I can relate to!
A great way to introduce java to a teen or an adult. I bought this for my nephew and wanted to read the 1st few pages to see what I thought... I kept reading and learning myself. I have programmed in basic but always thought java was too hard. The author breaks it down into small understandable bytes and uses real life comparisons to help you understand it. If I can get it, so can anyone!

The book is quite good although our copy had a few extra pages in ...
Bought for my 10 year old son who already has some coding experience (Python and JavaScript). The book is quite good although our copy had a few extra pages in the front from a Brazilian Ju-Jitzu book... bizarre, but easy to ignore once you find the real book start :)

Except that great book for child to start interest in Java
Bit confusing in term of what "talking" really means. Except that great book for child to start interest in Java. Be aware that some concepts like Objects(constructor) and classes, operators are best to research beforehand(google) to supplement the book.

Misleading title, NOT FOR kids.
Although this book gives a lot of information about Java, this book is CERTAINLY NOT designed for kids!! Very few graphical representations of the concepts and no let up on the jargon.
