Llamas and Alpacas: Keeping a Small-Scale Camelid Herd

This book tells everything quickly and sweetly.
This book is sweet, not too long, and comprehensive. Once you have read it you will know why or why not you want to own llamas or alpacas. There is a moderate amount of trivia to hold your interest. When I thought camelids wre unobtainable I gave all my llama llibrary to a llama rescue. This was the first llama book I bought when I reconsidered my plans for the future. Sue Weaver told everything--- except the fact that some Rescues need to be rescued themselves as I learned for myself. My bad Rescue is part of Southeast Llama Rescue, which is featured in the book in detail.

Good beginner's guide, but
This is one of the few beginners' guides available for those looking to keep alpacas (as I am), and it's full of good info. It falls short in a few ways by not giving *quite* enough information (the section on fencing comes to mind), but otherwise it's AOK.One annoyance, though: The author refers to both alpacas and llamas as "lamas" (with one L), claiming that it's a standard term. I don't think that's the case. I've never heard it used before, and haven't seen anyone else refer to both species as anything but "camelids." (Even Wikipedia's "lama" disambiguation page doesn't mention it among the 34 uses of "lama.")

New to Alpacas? Get this book!
I'm a new Alpaca owner. I needed to know EVERYTHING! This book was fantastic. Easy to read. Organized. Super helpful. I would definitely recommend this one if you are new to alpacas and llamas.

She offers great advice for first-time camelid owners in this one
I have several of Sue's books. Any time I am thinking about a new species, I see if she has a book on it. She offers great advice for first-time camelid owners in this one. Very informative. Buy it before you buy an alpaca or llama, though. Alpacas, especially, are not animals you can throw out into a pasture. They are very high maintenance are although they look cuddly, aren't. They're still amazing pets, though, if you are willing to put in the work and the time.

Good starting point
This is a super helpful book if you are looking for basics. One thing to know is they discuss "llama" and "lama". I initially thought it was a typo. I then realized that the "lama" is referring to both "llamas" and alpacas.

This will stay on top of my book stack
It's hard to find a decent alpaca book out there that doesn't cost 300 bucks. It's also hard to find a book on Alpacas only, so I settled for this and was pleasantly surprised. The Llamas don't hog all of the pages, and the author was careful to include information regarding both. Unless an awesome book on just Alpacas comes along, this will stay on the top of my book stack.

Well organized and interesting introduction to alpacas and llamas and their care.
Nice book with alot of information for people thinking about raising alpacas and llamas . You get a good idea what you will be in for wether you want them for breeding, fiber or just pets. Made me realize I'm not really interestested in the breeding aspect and will be getting castrated males. For in depth information you'll obviously need a more detailed ( and expensive) book.
