Sheaffer300 - Refillable fountain pen, medium nib, glossy black, gold tone trim

Sheaffer 300 Fountain PenBased on a WW2 torpedo, this is a 'beefy', large and heavy pen. It is also a rather old style that reminds me of the sort of pen used by shallow and pretentious young city executives with no class or style, but who wear loud striped suits and have a Rolex strapped on each wrist.Balance is good, but rather leaden when the cap is posted. The medium nib is smooth and has a wee hint of character. Ink flow is good at all times. The fine nib has no flex and no line variation. It is well made in all it's variants.I doubt I'd want to use it to write an essay, due to the weight; it doesn't give much line variation for classy scripts. The medium nib is a tad on the fine side for a signature pen and the fine nib approaches the Chinese style of 'pretty narrow'.All that sounds quite negative, but the truth is that they are aspects of the pen's 'character' which is really quite nice.Recommended? Ummmm . . . . I like it a lot, but for regular use I prefer the Sagaris which is smaller and has more class.Update - I now have a couple of these and they perform very well, particularly with a 'thick' ink like Diamine Jet Black. It's a different pen to a Parker Sonnet, Waterman Expert, Pelikan M200 and so on - that's not a deal breaker.

Pretty disappointed with with this pen. I have the ballpoint version and the rollerball version and like the pen, but also like a fountain pen and had a Sheafer Taranis , but thought I would buy this fountain pen to have a matching set. I like the robust quality and weight in the pen. Unfortunately, the cartridge does not fit properly / securely in the fountain pen and it leaks badly . ( I use the converter / refillable style but also tried actual cartridges ). Also, when writing, it sometimes smudges - a problem I never have with the Taranis or my Parker Urban ( also a good pen).

A true Grand Prix champion of pens - would expect nothing more if Ferrari has endorsed it! Writes beautifully and smoothly. It can feel a little heavy, but only when used with the top attached - remove this completely and the pen is actually quite light. Very happy :)

Bought as a gift, this is exactly what was wanted. It is well-balanced, not flimsy, and writes smoothly with the nib supplied. The design is great and so is the colour.
