Secrets to Realistic Drawing

I am learning a lot from the writing in this book, but not from the illustrations. The manufacture of this book is cheap and even the writing is fuzzy with little pixels floating around the letters in the words. The photographs used for illustration are truly horrid and difficult to see. There are shadows from the previous page bleeding through to the one you might be currently using distorting illustrations due to cheap paper used in production. The illustrations are almost as bad. For this subject matter it would have been helpful to have useful illustrations. I really do not understand all the 5 star reviews, but perhaps the give away is that several reviewers refer to the author by her first name. For over $20 I really expected more....for anyone who has already purchased this book and is struggling with the practice sessions at the end, try using the finished drawing for your reference "photo" since the reference photos are almost completely indecipherable.

The first thing is, Carrie is to the point with what she thinks matters. This helps. She is careful to explain that there are many ways to do something and she gives examples. The realism she delineates leads to better artwork and her examples encourage a desire to do more.[edit - I just finished the book. Incredibly kind words and minute attention to detail from the author leave me nearly speechless. This book is worth your time, if you want to have hope you can draw or even have hope you can learn to draw better.]

I have been drawing for years, most friends and family know me for my Artistic Drawings. I always thought How could anyone teach me More or Even Better ways to Draw Realistic. I was wrong, this Book was Great, it showed me new ways to look at things and see how it should be on Paper. Even when i am just playing around my Sketches Look Real. The Book explains in very easy directions, and a great step by step. I would get for a kid wanting to learn how to draw, or Even an Adult just wanting to Improve there Artistic abilites.

Wow, I am really impressed with the detail this book gives. It is an incredibly encouragement to artists, and gives amazing, photo-like examples of drawing. A wonderful addition to both new and seasoned artists. I highly recommend adding this to your bookshelf. It also would make a wonderful gift to the drawing artist that seems to have all the tools they need. It may just inspire them, or you, with some new techniques!

Awesome book with wonderful tips on using perspective in drawing. I highly recommend this book to everyone I know that is interested in drawing. I already had many years of drawing under my belt and this book has given me some great insight that I will use to refine my skills.

A great help for the beginner

This book wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. Certainly not that helpful for me, there are better written books on drawing techniques available.

Arrived in good order. Very good book, recomended to me by a fellow beginner. It has easy to understand instruction and excellend diagrams.

Sehr gutes und professionelles Buch für Photorealismus. Ich würde aber auch immer gern die Vorlage einer Zeichnung sehen. Das fehlt hier oft, oder die Vorlage ist zu klein um genügend Details zu erkennen. Ein Referenzfoto sollte schon in einer Größe gegeben sein, die man nicht mit einer Lupe betrachten muss. Die Authorin improvisiert in der Zeichnung vieles, was man im Foto gar nicht erkennen kann, obwohl sie im Text von solchen Improvisationen abrät. Der Praxisteil des Buchs fällt auch etwas gering aus. Kleine Anmerkung: Das B in HB steht für Black.
