A Good Clive Cussler - "Dirk Pitt" Novel
"Treasure" is a very good, if typical, Clive Cussler, "Dirk Pitt" action novel. It is built around a very different version of history than we believe we know about. It leads to consequences in today's world. There are usually multiple contemporary plot lines that eventually converge. I think that some aspects of these novels may appeal somewhat more to males than females. If one has never read a Clive Cussler novel before, one may find this novel fairly entertaining.I have been reading the "Dirk Pitt" series in the order in which they were published. This is the ninth. I read one very few months so that the exercise does not grow stale. Each story stands on its own, however there are recurrent characters and references to prior stories that might appear quizzical if one has not read the prior stories. But that does not really take away from the action. Also as time goes on, I sense that Mister Cussler is becoming a more skilled novelist.More and more, as I keep reading the novels, there is a formula and a certain amount of predictability. Some of the episodes remind me of an "Indiana Jones" action sequence. I really appreciate the fact that there is very little vulgar language within these novels. On the other hand, I feel there is a bit of stereotyping, most noticeably to me, of females. My children are all adults now. I am somewhat conservative by nature. There is no way I would have allowed my adolescent son to read this novel or other "Dirk Pitt" novels without serious parental guidance. There is even one "Dirk Pitt" novel, "The Mediterranean Caper" if memory serves me correctly, wherein Dirk Pitt strikes a grieving woman because he feels she has grieved long enough. If that had continued I had committed myself to stopping the reading of these novels. In all fairness, I believe both Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt have evolved since then as author and character. In summary, this is a good, but not great novel. It seems to follow the formula of other novels in this series. I am glad that I read it. Eventually I do intend to read the next "Dirk Pitt" novel "Dragon", but I think I need a break... Thank You.

Quite an adventure
All Cussler's adventure stories are entertaining. I found this one to be somewhat "disconnected"...lots of twists and turns that didn't make sense to me. But it was still great reading with a strange plot. Not one of the best I've read, and I've read most of the Dirk Pitt and Oregon Files books.

Another disappointing, unsatisfying Cussler work
Like many other casual readers, I guess I am addicted to Clive Cussler. And like many times before, I thought the first chapters in "Treasure" were excellent, being based on yet another intriguing history-related premise that is Cussler's method. But yet again Clive was unable to write the rest-of-the-book equally as brilliant as the beginning. Once again his book degenerated into comic-book-quality literature --without comic book illustrations. Hey, let's go along for a ride in a jalopy down a Colorado ski slope with Keystone Cop arab terrorists behind us peppering us with hot lead! But have no fear; Dirk can outdrive them and save the day! OMG! What is this a Mickey Mouse cartoon? Half the book is like this!I enjoy reading Cussler's stuff on a certain level but some it is so outrageous that it gets to be comical. That is Cussler's patented money-making style, I guess. My bookshelf is filled with his paperbacks now. I've read all of the Dirk Pitt series and then a few of the others. But I came to the conclusion long ago that Cussler is just a clever guy --a brainwashed & frequently naive (i.e. "Dirk Pitt: Ex-US Air force, he is cool, courageous and resourceful, which is why he works for the US National Underwater and Marine Agency"... Gimme a break, Clive. What are you? 10 years old?), educated but dumb, lucky guy who happens to be a clever writer, or at least come up with clever premises --clever enough to sell millions of books anyway. It goes to show you don't have to be a genius to get rich. Just have a gimmick, and repeat it over and over.

My entry to adult fiction... and held up enough for my son as well
My 6th grade son was begging for some new books, as he was running out of Tolkien, whizzed through the Eragon series, and was finishing up GoT (much to my wife's chagrin)... BAM. Enter Dirk Pitt. He loved it, and is now going through the Cussler and Ludlum and Clancy I grew up with.Ancient shipwreck / international cutthroat / Aztecs as a new, powerful political party / Library of Alexandria / good old fashioned FUN.

Gripping adventure
This Dirk Pitt adventure won't disappoint fans of the series, with larger-than-life characters involved in plenty of rip-roaring action across the globe. The story - and especially the climactic showdown in a barren but spectacular corner of South America - would definitely make an excellent film. The only issue I had was that there were almost too many plot elements and characters, and the book would have been no worse off for a slightly slimmed-down plot. Not that the story is difficult to follow. Overall, a great yarn, perfect for holiday reading.

Everything and the kitchen sink
I have read many of Clive Cusslers books and always enjoyed them, this being no exception. However I did think that he had too much going on constantly making the book over complicated...tooo much story. It would have been more enjoyable if he had stuck to the original thread and worked around it rather than expanding into 2 or 3 other entwined sub plots. Great stuff having said that. His older work like this is better I always think than his new writings where he shares the credits with co writers.

A great story
This is a great story that has plenty of mystery and suspense. The characters are wonderfully crafted, with the Numa team pitted against a backward thinking family who are trying to take over two countries.
