US Soldier vs Afrikakorps Soldier: Tunisia 1943 (Combat)

First encounters...
U.S. and German soldiers encountered each other for the first time under conditions of significant ground combat in Tunisia in early 1943. The U.S. II Corps was well equipped, but its soldiers and leaders were new to combat. The German Afrikakorps was ground down by years of combat and interdicted supply lines, but its solders and leaders were tough veterans. Author David Campbell analyzes their first encounters in this well-written Osprey Combat Series book. The author describes the respective U.S. and German organizations, their training, equipment, and logistics. Of note, the author puts some welcome emphasis on their respective capabilities for communication. Three combats are analyzed: Sidi Bou Zid, Kasserine Pass, and El Guettar. The analysis is nicely supported with period photographs and modern illustrations and battle diagrams. The author's conclusions are tough but fair. Highly recommended as a concise look at early U.S.-German ground combat.

Perfect topic for Osprey
The author did an excellent job covering the few battles involving the DAK versus the US Army. Some readers might conflate other engagements with those involving the Afrika Korps, but in fact those battles involved other than DAK units (there were a lot of them to include a number of replacement battalions sent to augment the divisions already deployed in Tunisia and North Africa). Before buying it pays to realize that the Afrika Korps retreated from El Alamein to Tunisia while the bulk of the German units that opposed the Americans in Tunisia consisted of divisions, regiments, and battalions sent after Rommel's defeat at El Alamein. As a student of the Tunisian campaign, I can say that the research, narrative and maps are of the excellent quality. Photographs, not so much so but despite that disappointment I highly recommend this publication.

Tunis location wrong. Will student's family notice?
An Embarassing editting problem. I'm sending this book to a 9th grader living in Tunis, Tunisia for one of my virtual Soldiers & Dioramas' programs. I have been using, recommending, and giving out Osprey books for the past 20 years in my programs, and I will continue to do so. I also hope this student will take my 3rd Punic War camp this summer. So correct location in a reference book is important especially if you live there. I'll see if the family notices the error since they live by the GULF and airport!

Rommel versus Patton
The legendary afrika korps of WW2 is one of history’s great fighting units lead by one of the best generals ever, Erwin Rommel the Desert Fox. Another slam dunk from osprey as you will read about battles such as the infamous Kasserine Pass debacle.
