Movie
I like this movie because Jim Carrey was good in it. I usually don't like comedians in dramas, but Carrey was great.

Beautiful Garbage
Its Ace Ventura meets Me, Myself & Irene meets Se7en or 8MM or something gritty. Its not great, but it was Jim's first effort at the thriller genre and there's something to be said about that. This is a Jim Carrey movie, which is kind of a genre in itself. Don't watch if you're not a fan of his, this won't turn you.

Find something similar.
I applaud Jim Carrey’s efforts to do something other than comedy, but this simply isn’t a very good Thriller film. Those who watch the film will find that many plot points are a let down.

Film noir-like thriller, Carrey really shines in this one!
Walter Sparrow has a good life. He’s married to a beautiful woman (Virginia Madsen), and has a good relationship with his teenage son. He also works as a dog catcher. It’s not the most rewarding job, but it pays the bills, and he’s content with it. But a random run-in with a stray dog leads to strange occurrences. His wife buys him an used book for his birthday, and this book takes over his life. It sucks him in, doesn’t let go, and he feels close to the main character in the story, a quick-witted private detective named “Fingerling.” But that’s the thing. He has many things in common with the main character. It’s almost like the story is about him! And the number 23 — the number that drives Fingerling mad. This number is now driving Walter mad. He sees the number 23 everywhere. All numbers and equations add up to 23, even his current address. The number follows him, stalking him, just like the mysterious stray dog.Have I mentioned that I love stories within stories? Have I also mentioned that I love stories about books? And did I ever mention that I love Jim Carrey, and that he’s as good at playing serious roles as he is at playing comic ones? I never mentioned the latter, but I do believe it. This is a dark, gripping and atmospheric psych thriller that kept me watching in one sitting. I hardly ever watch something in one sitting. I watch bits and pieces here and there. But this movie? Couldn’t stop watching. I saw it a few months ago, but I didn‘t get around to reviewing it until now. How I wish it were still available on Prime! Anyway, I LOVED the film noir feel to it. Walter is a big fan of old mystery graphic novels — or “penny dreadfuls” — and it shows as he reads this strange and compelling book that seems to be talking back to him. Virginia Madsen does a good job playing the loving and perplexed wife who may or may not be provoking Walter’s madness. It has twists and turns and an unreliable protagonist, and even though the movie’s ebb and flow is unsteady at times (too many plot holes), the inconsistencies don’t deter you from enjoying the movie. Fact is, most thrillers have plot holes, but what matters is the message that these stories are sending. This is a movie about growth and redemption, with a dash of self-awareness, and I appreciate this message. I give The Number 23 four out of five Milk and Honey Americanos (Mini’s Special!).
