Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John (Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary)

I'm just wrapping up a preaching series on John's letters and found Akin's little commentary to be incredibly helpful. I consulted his much more academic NAC commentary some, but found this to be indispensable in thinking through how John's words applied to the 21st century church. For most pastors, time and money are both significant limitations. This is a very inexpensive commentary and it present's John's heart in a format that resembles a well-structured sermon.Each section of the book shows the "big idea" for the text and is followed by what amounts to a sermon outline. Akin does a tremendous job breaking down the text. He has illustrations which are spot on. And everything is written in easy, conversational language. Akin can (and did) write a serious academic commentary, but when you read this one you see the pastor's heart shine though.I don't think this commentary is only for pastors though. I think it would be profitable for personal devotions in 1 John, or for preparing lessons for adult Sunday School or a small group discussion. Akin does not get buried in the minutia of the original languages or the deep and often confusing theological battles as he brings the message of John's letters to life.As a pastor who knows the original languages and wanted to study the issues deeply, I also found Yarbrough and Jobes very helpful.

All of the Christ-centered Exposition commentaries are valuable. Concise, theologically strong, with good applications. As a Pastor, it's one of a handful of good commentaries that I use for each book of the Bible. Would be good for Bible study groups as well.

Our Pastor is currently preaching on these books written by John. These books are not necessarily difficult to understand but I’m enjoying reading this book along with the preaching. The author has always had something to say about the verses our Pastor was preaching on that gave me a better, a broader or a little different way to look at the verses.

I bought this book as another source for the current sermon series I am delivering each Sunday. I have not completed the entire commentary yet but have read enough to know that each section is formatted pretty much the same. The format for each section sounds more like a manuscript sermon rather than in-depth analysis of the text. There are a couple places where it seems the author veers away the verses at hand onto a rabbit trail that is somewhat related. The author does provide references to other Scripture when discussing their main point; example: they pull a number of verses talking about light when discussing 1 John 1:5-10. I have found there to be a lack of historical references or discussion of opinions of the text that may differ from the author's. For $9.99 (Kindle edition) I would consider this a decent secondary resource. There are other commentaries out there that far surpass this one when it comes to content, explanation of the text and historical considerations.

This is more of a sermon than a commentary. As a devotional work or sermon this would be ok.

I tried to find and use other commentaries but this is superior to anything I have read thus far. I heartily recommend these. 1 John was a knockout! I 've just finished Mark and now I'm reading 1 & 2 Timothy. The price was right as well. Buy one and see for yourself. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
