Bruce Lee's Fighting Method Basic Training, Vol. 2

An excellent book on some of the basics of the late Bruce Lee's Jet Kune Do.
As a lifetime student of the martial arts (Judo, Karate, Jujitsu, Kobudo, Kenjutsu, Krav Maga, Tanto-jutsu, JKD etc) I am always seeking more information on the various combat systems being taught today. In my more than 60 years of training, both as a student and an instructor, I have always been a fan of the late Bruce Lee and read everything I could on his philosophy and fighting method of Jeet Kune Do.This is the second book in a four book series that he and M. Uyehara worked together to produce. This volume is essential for anyone who desires to better understand the specific principles, techniques and tactics of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. This text is organized into five chapters. The first chapter emphasizes the importance of building your body for combat. He explains exercises to build stamina, warm-up movements, flexibility and abdominal exercises. The second chapter explains stances and balance principles. Footwork is covered in chapter three. Chapter four deals with power training and how to develop powerful punches, strikes and kicks. The final chapter focuses on developing speed in your punches and kicks. In conclusion, if you are interested in the late Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, you will want this book in your personal library, along with his other three volumes.Rating: 5 Stars. Very Interesting Read - Helpful Workout Tips & Hints
I'm not a martial artist. I don't know anything about Jeet Kune Do like most of these reviewers. I grew up only knowing the western style of fighting, boxing at it's simplest level. Put up your hands, jab with your left and punch with your right.Bruce's style is totally different. Everything is predicated on speed. Strikes are used with the knuckles of the last 3 fingers (middle, ring, and pinky) instead of middle finger and forefinger. Instead of turning the wrist over to at the end of the punch the wrist is kept straight. He used southpaw stance because 80% of the work is done with the lead hand and foot (he was right handed). All these techniques run counter intuitive with western style of boxing.I appreciate reading about Bruce's workout techniques. It's really the reason I bought this book. I wish there were more. He talked about riding his exercycle, jogging, skipping rope, and a few abdominal exercises. There are numerous other workout techniques that involve a wooden dummy, punching bags, speed bags, etc, however those do not concern me too much. I have already incorporated jump rope into my daily routine which includes situps. I plan to practice hitting an 8 X 11 piece of paper with my elbows to learn body control. Thanks to Bruce, I now feel like I will have an opportunity to really improve my fitness and coordination but only time will tell as to the results I will achieve.I give this book 4 stars because it contains information that I can actually use in real life. I docked it one star because it contained too much information on stances (the on-guard stance in particular) which was incredibly boring and not at all what I needed.

Great for what it is...
I became interested in Jeet Kune Do after reading Black Belt magazine. I bought the first volume in a bookstore, and this volume through Amazon. Since then, you can purchase all four volumes of Bruce Lee's fighting method in one book here: http://www.amazon.com/Bruce-Lees-Fighting-Method-Complete/dp/0897501705/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335855490&sr=1-1. If you're considering buying this book, just go with the complete set in one volume, you won't regret it!

book 2 in the series - on Jeet Kune Do
This is the second book in a series of four, all of which aim to provide useful guidance and instruction on Bruce Lee's fighting methods. Each book is quite short, at about 130 pages, and consists of written information and black & white photos. As the books progress, the methods get increasingly complex. This second book concerns basic training, and builds on self-defence techniques. If you're a fan of Bruce Lee then I highly recommend this collection of books. Taken together, they offer a comprehensive introduction to Jeet Kune Do. The other books are: Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Self-Defense Techniques Vol. 1 , Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Skill in Techniques v. 3 (Bruce Lee's Fighting Method) , and Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Advanced Techniques Vol 4 (Bruce Lee's Fighting Method) . Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Self-Defense Techniques Vol. 1Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Skill in Techniques v. 3 (Bruce Lee's Fighting Method)Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Advanced Techniques Vol 4 (Bruce Lee's Fighting Method)

it offers some good tips and exercises that you can incorporate into your ...
I am not a kung fu or Jeet Kun Do practitioner (I train Karate) however wanted to broaden my horizons and opted to take a look at some of Bruce Lee’s methods, and went for this instructional book. Although dated, it offers some good tips and exercises that you can incorporate into your daily practice. There are plenty of clear (although dated) photos, but the text, although provides great explanations of how to do the movement doesn't necessarily go into the why.

Basic is basic
If you were like me, and had very little idea about martial arts except you wanted to learn it, then this book is a good choice. It has good descriptions of basic stretching, strength training, speed training and more, on how to get you physically fit and capable of practicing martial arts.It includes the basic techniques of stances, punching and kicking that you would learn should you take up the art of Jeet Kune Do with an instructor.Have no illusions, you will not be able to pick up this book as a novice and suddenly be a legned of JKD just because it has Lee's name on it. It is made clear in the book, just as it would be taught by an instructor, that you must train in these ways for months to get them down. When you do this, the techniques start to become second nature which is the important thing. It explains in great detail of the reasons behind the training. Muscle memory, nerve memory, stamina and latent power are some of the reaons behind needing the correct form.As I say, these are the basics. You will need this book, even if you feel more advanced as a martial artist because of the simple reason that the basics in JKD are different to other forms, and as many Martial artists will tell you, the continual practice of the basics keeps you on top.To get into JKD, learn the basics, learn from the man that developed the formless art, buy this book.
