The Art of Love (Dover Literature: Poetry)

Fantastic and lively translation, highly readable. I like this translation better than the Modern Library translation, but the Modern Library edition also includes the Latin text side-by-side (reverse pages) to the English for those of you who also like to read a little Latin.. This edition (Dover Books) does not have the Latin text, just a modern English translation.

ローマ初代皇帝の逆鱗に触れ、追放処分となった詩人Ovidの問題作。しかし、読んでみればユーモア溢れる、男女へのナンパ術指導書。男編では、とにかくマメにかまってあげること。過度の贈り物は女の物欲を刺激するだけでマイナス等のアドバイスは現代でも通用する。女編では、華美な衣装や宝石は男を辟易させるだけ、シンプルがベスト、人前での化粧ほど醜いものはない、などはまったく同感。怒る女、暗い女は嫌われる、しかし据え膳はするな、などは女性にも参考になるのでは。『変身物語』は格調高く古典だが、この本を読むと、やはり流行作家だったのだ、との感想を持った。でも、追放になるほどの悪書とはどうしても思えない。初代皇帝はまじめすぎたのか？
