Great Illustrations
Emily Gravett's illustrations are superb. The book doesn't have a story as such.My little son hasn't taken to it as he hasto other books like those by Eric Carle. In INR, these books turn out to beexpensive. And hence a buyer's overallsatisfaction level goes down.I also have Gravett's The Odd Egg,Wolves and Meerkat Mail. Among allthese Meerkat Mail is the best--greatvisuals, and lovely story. My son alsoloves Apple Pear Orange Bear, which toodoesn't have a story, but the four words aremagically combined. The visual effectswin the day to produce a simple butfascinating book. At the end of n numberof readings, I keep asking, 'After all, whydoes my son love this book with no story assuch?' No answer to this question, but the truthis he loves the book. Yup!

Fun book, great illustrations.
Like 'Brown Bear Brown Bear', it is a book that a child can pretend read on their own.

Nice pictures, but text is ridiculously boring. Don't really see what age this is for
The nice illustrations are utterly wasted on an extremely repetitive and boring text. Monkey and me x 4 went to see some (penguins / kangaroos / monkeys etc. / home for tea). I felt like a tool reading it to my son - there is no opportunity to do any character voices, or describe something interesting on the page. It's not a story, just several sentences. So you have to read it in a stupid manic fashion to make it sound interesting. Otherwise you make it sound very boring (which it is). It's a joke that this is supposed to be for 2-5 year olds! Maybe for a 1-1.5 year old but even then, I found it more interesting to read books where there was more going on! By 2 we we doing Gruffalo and other such short stories. This book would definitely not cut it. I read it twice and wish my wife didn't waste the money on it.

Simply AMAZING
We have been borrowing this book from the library, on and off for about 2 years and I finally decided that it is one to keep so have finally bought it.I started reading this to both my children from about 18months old and they have LOVED it. How do I know this? Because , even when the book is not in sight my children have both repeated the rhythmic and repetitive story to me - it's pretty amazing to hear this from such young children. The simple but repetitive language encourages speech development and it is quiet poetic if you ask me. Additionally, the anticipation as they turn the page (They went to see............?) makes it and avid read for a young child. My youngest child has always struggled to sit through a book (quite opposite to my eldest) but this book has captivated her.Another point, are the beautiful illustrations which make this book a visual pleasure. Despite reading it SO many times, it was only recently I studied the pictures and discovered they give the reader a clue of who "Monkey and me" are going to see. I will be interested how long my kids will like this book because it is SO simple it may only hold the attention of a very young reader (under 5 maybe?) but only time will tell on that one and I am prepared to be surprised.

Not as good as I thought
I bought this for my 2 year old daughter and 1 year old son thinking the repetitiveness of it would hold their attention and keep them entertained, however it didnt work out that way as they both get bored with hearing the same words over and over again, even though the animal pages are fun and a surprise its the pages in between that just dont keep their attention.

Every child should have one
The rhythm and pace, illustrations and theme are fantastic. My child has been delighted by this from 4mos of age. We've even gone as far as to get a soft toy monkey and finger puppets for the other animals so that we can act it out. Have bought copies for friends children and they are similarly thrilled by it. Brilliant.

Lovely illustrated, well made board book. Simple but lovely pictures and nice to see some animals that don't get a lot of press in children's books!

lovely rhyming story
I bought this for a trip to the states - to keep our 22 month old entertained on the flight as he loves monkeys. It kept him happy over the 2 weeks and he still loves it. We are now word perfect and can recite it at will. My son always talks about the monkey eating 'the 'nana and yoghurt' at the end of the book! Lovely, cheerful book.

Enjoyable to read once, but really not much depth to it.
Enjoyable but not much depth to it. I dont feel this was decent value for money and it would not be a cornerstone book in any child's library if I had to pick a top list of books.

Requested by my 4 year old repeatedly
After we'd borrowed this from the library 3 or 4 times, I thought it would be best to just buy it! He was 3 when we first got it, and he loves 'reading' it to us. The plot is......lacking any twists or turns (sorry parents) but you can fit some good dramatic pauses in!
