Heartwrenching
I don't know how many times I laid this book momentarily aside after finishing a chapter with tears in my eyes and my heart twisted in a knot.Sister Anne Catherine, as noted in previous reviews, was an ecstatic nun who showed the stigmata. The first manifestation came as a young woman after a vision of Our Lord holding up a crown of flowers and a crown of thorns; asked to choose one, she chose the crown of thorns. The book is divided into three parts, the first consisting of a short biography. The description of the suffering she herself endured (which I believe caused the reconversion of the man transcribing her visions - a lapsed Catholic and quite famous poet in his time) prepares the reader to enter Sister's visions, and relive the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.Part II, The Meditations, gives background on the ceremony of the Pasch in general, and on the particular events of the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist - all in startling detail: the building, the rooms, the chalice, the celebration, and the instruction of Jesus to his apostles.Part III, The Passion, begins in the Garden and takes us through the Way of the Cross to His death and glorious resurrection. It is the largest part of the book, and once more, the detail is vivid and alive. There is some short additional material on visions of the converted Roman soldiers."He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried."How many times have you repeated those words? Stepping inside Sister Anne Catherine's visions you live them, and reciting the Creed is somehow never quite the same.It should be noted that this book in no way is to be taken as inspired. It is not recognized as such by the Church, and does not pretend to be anything else but what it is - the visions of a woman who led an extraordinary, mystical life of suffering in communion with Our Lord. This edition is beautifully bound, well constructed, easy to read and comes with a ribbon page marker.

Worth reading
I had always wondered about the details of the Passion of Our Lord. Have you ever wondered were the Apostles remained during the days before the Resurrection? where Mary was? Did you know that Mary Magadalene was Lazarus youngest sister?. Besides what is told in the Bible, very little else was known about this time. Anne Catherine Emmerich gives an insight into the Passion that I had never dreamt possible; all of the sudden, that far away time and the all-too-high-to-reach and understand characters of the Passion, come to us as people (without taking away the Divinity of Jesus) with the suffering and reactions of real persons. This book gives all the detail that one could ever ask for. Of course, as they are personal revelations, one is not obliged to believe in them, but after reading the life of ACE and her other visions, is very hard not to believe in them..... they are incredibly rich in detail and knowledge.I highly recommend this book. It's great reading and a big boost to our Faith. Also very worth reading is the life of The Blessed Virgin Mary according to A.C. Emmerich's revelations.

The book that โThe Passion of the Christโ was based on.
This is the book that Mel Gibsonโs โThe Passion of the Christโ is based on. A true story of the visions sent to Anne Katherine Emmerich. She was very detailed in her description of the events that happened to Our Blessed Mother and our Lord, Jesus Christ. This purchase was worth every penny!!!

Print is too tiny.
I bought two copies to give to friends and the print was so tiny they did not enjoy trying to read it. I would purchase this wonderful story from another printing company.

If price doesn't deter you, this is the edition to own
This leather bound 'heirloom' edition is one that can be passed to subsequent generations in your family. It is unfortunately difficult to find so you can't imagine my joy when I located a copy recently for a friend. The binding came loose on my personal copy and I had to glue it but I suspect this is a consequence of storage conditions of an edition that has been out of print for quite some time. For devout Christians it is impossible not to be affected by Emmerich's vivid and graphic descriptions of the horrible events of Christ's passion. I feel closer to him each time I read these passages. This book is among my most treasured and the leather bound edition should last generations with proper care.

And He Suffered Under Pontius Pilate.....
"We Adore oh Christ and Praise You because by Your Holy Cross You have Redeemed the World." I received this book via Kindle at a bargain price of .99c....Sister Emmerich's detailed account of Our Lord's suffering is shocking and humbling. It is at times so hard to read because of the graphic details of the torture that Our Lord went through. This book should give the reader a complete grasp and understanding of the suffering that Our Lord endured for us so that death could be conquered. (It shows his total surrender and obedience to The Father) What also stood out for me was Jesus' constant prayer for his torturers as He endured the most shocking tortures. After reading Sister Emmerich's account, the phrase in the Aposstle's Creed "And He suffered under Pontius Pilate" has a deeper understanding for me.

A true meditation.
A meditation on the passion of Christ. It is very interesting and gives one alot to think about. It is not a book one just picks up and reads. Each page, every paragraph calls one to just stop, be still and think, pray, meditate before continuing. This book is not read with the mind but the heart.

The Passion of Christ
This is the book from which The Passion of Christ - the film - was taken. I bought it to help me through Holy Week and especially Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. It was most helpful and much longer than I had realised - so can be used throughout the year.
