There's an heroic quest, there's a love story, there's a coming-of-age, and off in the distance, we hear the rumblings of dragons, which I expect will be more central in future books in the series.A gripping and well-told saga.ORCHESTRA OF TREACHERIES: I am in awe of the worldbuild behind this series. It's one of the most finely detailed I have seen. Similar enough to Old China and India to be recognisable, yet each nation is distinctively itself. The fantasy elements are well integrated and are not overdone.It may seem odd to use the word 'restraint' of a book so rich, so complex and so teeming with ornate detail, yet it is restraint that distinguishes this writer for me. He is at all times in control of his story, and the result is a beautifully balanced work.I hope this series continues for a long, long time. I've become addicted to the scheming courtiers, the brave and beautiful heroine, her wisecracking sidekick and just the whole thing. It's like Monkey Magic crossed with Yes, Minister. I love, love, love it.DANCES OF DECEPTION The Dragon Songs books just get more and more exciting! Now, in this third book in the series, we have had time to become attached to the resourceful Kaiya and the dashing Jie, and in a fresh departure, we see Kaiya on a journey of personal development that's a major challenge to both protagonist and author. They both carry it off with grace and style, and although at times it had seemed this book must be the end of the series, a surprise ending reassures us of at least the possibility of more to come.I was about to mourn the necessity of waiting for Mr Kang to produce another book, but I see there is already one more published, and it will be wonderful if I do not melt my keyboard in my haste to acquire it.Highly recommended for lovers of fantasy, romance or historical fiction.SYMPHONY OF FATES:The plots in this wonderful series seem to get more complex with each new book, and you will need your wits about you to stay on top of the machinations of all the spies, devious bureaucrats, evil warlords and elves, not to mention the several sets of apparently identical twins. There's humour, there's excitement and there's emotion, and through the maelstrom strides the indomitable Kaiya, resourceful even in apparent defeat, with her youth and delicate stomach on the one hand balancing her heroic courage and resourcefulness on the other. It took me ten days to read it, because this book deserves to be savoured. Another great read from Mr Kang, and I hope there will be many more.

I don't normally give 3 star reviews - if I really like it I give 5 - and a book has to make me angry enough to spend the time writing a one star review.This book however has many good things to recommend it: great world building, excellent suspense and epic adventure with nonstop excitement. The male characters are well drawn and completely believable - I especially liked Geros and Tian's oldest brother. However the female characters Kaiya and Jie who he chose to make the major characters did not work at all. I spent a lot of time frustrated that Kaiya was so bound up in honor that she would not kill a man who justly deserved to be killed when she had the opportunity. She had been brought up as an Imperial Princess should have been ruthless in that situation knowing the stakes and just how many innocent people would die if she let him live. Some other plot device should have been used as this was not at all believable. Also very unbelievable was Kaiya not insisting on staying married to Tian regardless of his lack of desire for court life.Also rather unbelievable was the relationship between Jie and Tian's oldest brother - there was the opportunity for incredible chemistry as he proved himself worthy in battle - but Kang chose to explore the typical male fantasy of several women fighting over Tian.It would have been a much stronger story had Kang concentrated more on the male characters and the development of their heroic qualities.

I enjoyed this epic saga mixing magic, dragons, martial arts, intrigue and suspense. Strong female characters (I loved Jie). Immersive, but not boring descriptions, giving just the right dose of atmosphere. Complex plots. I loved the fact that the story takes us far away from the usual Western world, and instead dives deep in alternate feudal China. Beautifully written.I highly recommend to fans of the fantasy genre.

I found Dragon Songs Saga box set to be an incredible story for an incredible deal! This series follows the protagonist Kaiya as she strives to perfect her ability with a magic system based on music in order to save her world from disaster. I found the characters and world building of this series thoroughly enjoyable. The author has created a rich and immersive world based on medieval China that is diligently crafted down to the most minute detail. The author is obviously well-versed in the history and culture his characters move within. The characters themselves are well developed, and there are a lot of twists and turns as to who is good and who is not. I was thoroughly thrown off by one particular character who kept me guessing (for a couple of books!) as to what his true motives really were, and the revelation came as a wonderful shock. I would highly recommend Dragon Songs to any audience who appreciates detailed world building in a non-Western milieu, complex characters who evolve, and a writhing plot that will keep you guessing.

First book was a little slow in getting into, but after getting 'into' the characters and understanding their motivations and what drives them, the story began to take off.I enjoyed the Saga, it wasn't too technical but nor wasn't in any way patronising. The authors' characters all became like real people with their good and bad habits, especially Tian and (my favourite) Jie. The Chinese (or thereabout) setting gave the story something of an original feel.I really enjoyed the Saga, and am looking forward to what the author comes up with next

Love the story line! Haven't reached the end yet and it's such a good tale. I don't want to come to the end. I feel. I know the characters so well almost as though I've met them. I have to ration my sessions reading the story otherwise. I would never put my kindle down,absolutely fantastic,has adventure,suspense,romance,danger even horror ,hope there will be more to come.

It took quite a while to plough my way through this set but well worth it.The plethora of unusual names, and the number of characters makes Lord of the Rings seem like a magazine article.However, I would recommend it to anyone who likes Tolkien, just make sure you have the time to read it properly and you will be well rewarded.

I wasn’t expecting a lot from this series, and bought it on a whim. I was very pleasantly surprised. A vast landscape, sympathetic characters and a good, sprawling fantasy tale. Yes, it’s a bit derivative as is most fantasy, but the writing is generally good (the odd speech anachronism jars but not too much), and I would definitely recommend this series. Clearly there’s room for many other stories set in this world.

Took me a while to get a grip on all the characters and plots due to the complicated and similar names. Am into the story now and eager to learn the out come for the princess heroine. A great buy for £1.
