Sturdy, great-looking lamp for $30-odd bucks delivered! Plastic shade not so bad
Wanted to add to the other good reviews on this lamp. This torchiere is indeed solid, handsome, and an incredible deal. I like the streamlined, non-fussy look of it. It doesn't remind me of those "80s modern" torchieres with the clunky extra design touches, and practically every other torchiere being sold at an affordable price is reminiscent of those. We wanted a few dependable incandescent floor lamps for little money that would not be eyesores -- these fit the bill perfectly. The plastic shade -- while definitely not my preference if glass were an option -- is better than I'd expected. It's not as cheap-looking as another plastic-shaded torchiere we once had, which was a glossy smooth texture that you could tell at a glance was really chintzy plastic. This Normande torchiere's plastic diffuser shade is faintly textured so it looks *almost* like fogged/glazed glass from a distance, though closer to the lamp you can see (mostly b/c of color) that it's plastic. Anyway, because it's not shiny smooth, it doesn't pull your eye to the shade screaming out "I'm a cheapo plastic shade!" the way I kind of thought it might.I also like how the brushed steel column is easy to put together (you just have to remove some plastic spacer-protectors and plastic wrap from each threaded piece, and each segment is already in ordered position, cord already threaded, ends just needing to be screwed together with the head and shade screwed on top). Takes a couple minutes from start to finish. And the threaded column doesn't have incredibly obvious divisions once put together, so, in that regard, it looks nicer than many more expensive torchieres I've seen.Glad it has a 3-way switch, and that we can still use incandescents, since those are what we prefer. It's good and bright. The instruction sheet says you can also use one of the "eco" energy-saving bulbs interchangeably, if that's your preference. Base doesn't wobble, the cord is threaded through the base and out a divot, so there's no issue there, either. The design is nicely streamlined and balanced well, feels sturdy. Can't believe what a good deal this lamp is. Happy with this purchase!

For the money, it's a good lamp
I shopped a lot before making this purchase, both at local and online stores. I was willing to pay up to $100 for a lamp but didn't find anything that was along the lines I wanted. Here's what I like about this lamp:--I want a bright daylight color bulb. In this lamp I could use a daylight LED bulb that equivalent to 100 watts.--I wanted the diameter (14") and shape of the shade. Yes, I would have preferred glass but I couldn't find any that were in my price range.--I wanted an electric cord that was white or clear, not most are. And I wanted it to be fed in through the base of the lamp, not off the side of the pole as most lights I saw in my price range were.--the brushed metal silver pole looks quite nice, a lot better than another similarly priced lamp I have. I spray some WD40 on the corner of a paper towel and wiped each set of threads with the towel, and they screwed together without a problem. What I don't like:--the base is not totally flat, so it has a tiny wobble to it. Not much, but really, having a totally stable base is important. It will work, but this is the reason I didn't give it 5 stars.--the shade could have been a little thicker. It's not flimsy, but it's a little thicker would have been better.Overall I think it's well worth the $40 price.

Easy to assemble - well designed lamp
I purchased this floor lamp to use in my master bedroom for reading and study purposes. At the time of this review, I've only had it a couple of days; however, I'm very pleased with the way it looks and the amount of light it provides using a 3-way 150 watt bulb, which is the recommended bulb. You must purchase this bulb separately - it does NOT come with a light bulb.I'm a senior woman living alone, and I easily assembled this lamp within 15 minutes without rushing. It comes with assembly instructions on a single piece of paper, which I only glanced over, primarily to see if the black bushings were needed in the final assembly process...they aren't. You basically start with the base and work your way up to the top of the lamp. The four, metal pole pieces are loosely in the correct order after removal from the Styrofoam packing because the electrical cord passes through them from the topmost bulb receptacle down to the heavy base. After removing and discarding all the black, plastic bushings, you start with the base and screw the first pole segment into it, then pull the electrical cord through the now-attached pole and base to take up the slack before screwing in the second pole segment. Continue in this manner until all pieces are fully assembled. I found the instructions to be helpful and thorough enough to easily assemble this floor lamp. The lamp parts were well packaged for shipping and kept the metal parts from incurring any scratches or other damage during the shipping process, even if they throw the box around (and they often do - I used to work for three of the top carriers and saw this happen many times). As for the longevity of the light switch at the top of the lamp, I can't really speak to that at this time. Having read a review that said it failed after a couple of months' use, I've opted to plug it into a wall socket that allows me to switch off the lamp using the wall switch in my bedroom. This should help with wear and tear on the lamp switch itself. I've included a photo of the lamp switch, which has three, hard-stop positions to adjust the brightness level of the 3-way bulb. If you want a smooth turning, gradual brightness adjustment (aka dimmer switch), then this lamp isn't for you.All in all, I'm very pleased with this floor lamp and would recommend it to my budget-minded friends and family. I purchased this lamp and did NOT receive it in exchange for my review.
