It’s OK I would have liked to have read this book before I Began to dive
It’s OK for beginners or for those that haven’t been diving in a long time very good explanation on how to control buoyancy and help to practice it to get it down a lot of storytelling before it gets to the point It does go beyond just the buoyancy and has very good mental practice how to think as a diver to avoid fearsAnd how to increase your confidence level good book to read before you ever start taking a diving class and just to keep it on hand if you don’t dive oftenEnough said

Great Book
I've been diving since 1974 and am certified as an Instructor, so I've read many books on diving. This book is the best source for proper buoyancy I have ever read. The author also includes a lot of pertinent information for divers, students and wannabees. Should be a must read for all.

Excellent read for new & novice divers! Get it!!!
Excellent information for new divers and review for the novice diver. Explains very well how to identify and steer clear of the less than reputable dive shops and instructors who care more about churning out numbers than qualifying properly instructed new divers. Also explains very well some important basics that some dive classes may gloss over like buoyancy, which really is key to scuba diving enjoyment and safety. I enjoyed this read and I recommend it to others!

Funny and relatable
I just got my open water diving license 3 weeks ago and everything that John Kean wrote in this book sounded like they were speaking to me. Majority of the points he highlighted were very much relatable, such as difficulties and challenges new divers face, as well as the funny qwirky moments too! I even managed to take out few tips and tricks in improving my diving skills as well as making me a more competent and confident diver. Definitely recommend this book to other divers!

For those that want to understand why we use certain equipment and diving procedures to ensure we return to the surface safely every time,
This is a great read, explaining in easy to read sections, each component or part, that Scuba divers should know,For Instructors, it reminds us what is important, and why,A helpful and handy reference, which having read it, gives me ideas how I can improve my teaching methods, and how I present important lessons to my divers (young and old, inexperienced and experienced),Thanks John for sharing

Love this book
After reading several books on diving, mainly more tutorial like, I realy enjoyed this book. The important topics like: safty, understanding of the environment and its behavior, descent, buoyancy, propulsion, ascent and more are covered extensively with careful and practical guidance. I feel as if John Kean is actually talking and training me. The book is organized in a very thoughtful way.Highly recommend reading.

Should be compulsory reading for new students and a lot of instructors!
An entertaining and interesting insight into the dive industry. Targeted and the prospective diver, but applies to everyone no matter what level of experience.John Kean covers a great deal of information in an informative and entertaining fashion, and eloquently addresses many divers pet peeves about the industry and diving bad habits.

Bought to brush up before recertification
Packed with unbiased practical advice from an author with nothing left to prove. Read in preparation for my return to SCUBA after a 15 year hiatus. I was apprehensive, but Kean has quelled my doubts and righted some misunderstandings while resurfacing lost factoids and taught me plenty more. I honestly can't wait to get to a dive center and re-cert!

Fantastic
Following on from A Walk On The Deep Side and Lost Wife Saw Barracuda, I started reading this book.Yet to start diving but most people you speak to (as mentioned in other books) are negative towards diving as it's dangerous and you will get the bends. HOWEVER, this book cuts out all the crap that some others have, and puts all the information right in front of you to give you the knowledge to make you a better diver (or atleast in my case make a decision regarding taking it up and help me with the theory). This book if you are already an existing diver is a must read and if you, like me, are considering diving but don't know much about the theory behind it, read this book and it will fill you with all the information you desire.Basically, buy this book. It's greatly increased my knowledge regarding my soon to be hobby!

I'm a new diver. Wish I would have read this book, plus a few others, before getting certified.

A must read for the new divers
I couldn't understand in full how the SCUBA schools worked, what was behind the diving activity and why I wasn't a good diver; long time ago I started to question my training and decided to make progress on my own!...now this book exposes the reality and answers a lot of questions.
