A gem of a book!
A friend recommended this book to me...what a great find!! Mr. Proferes really lays out the mechanics of filmmaking with great detail! Really enjoyed his breakdown of Notorious, Truman, and 8 1/2...picked a several good tips as well!

An exceptionally well written book! A must for anyone getting into video!
Don't just tell me, SHOW me! That's what this marvelous book does. The author makes wonderful use of floor diagrams and storyboard illustrations to make his points. He uses famous examples (Notorious, The Truman Show, many, many films) plus his own simple screenplay scenes to demonstrate lens use, camera angles and movement, and basic "rules" of film making. He even covers the jobs to be performed in any film production and how a director can make the most of working with people in these positions. Fantastic book!

Not great.. Nothing really to learn from this book.
This book was assigned for reading for my Cinematography class and I read about certain movies from A. Hitchcock. They talk about just the certain basic things about placing characters and what you would do as a cinematographer. I guess the book says fundamentals that it was really the basic concepts, which I would not really recommend. The book was a drag because after Chapter 6, it was just about the Dramatic blocks from the movies and screenplays and how they place characters.

Thorough, very very thorough
There's so much good stuff in this book that it's actually quite hard going - and I mean that in a good way.If you are new to the world of filmmaking - like me - then it's simple stuffed with good stuff. If you're more experienced, then I'm certain it'll give you a new take on things you already know.

A great book for every aspect of filmmaking.
This book is focused on the director and their roles which, primarily, is to communicate with the cast and crew. No matter what part of the filmmaking process you want to study about or be a part of, you will have to communicate with the director- and this book is a thorough guide of how to do that efficiently and cooperatively. This book as been helpful on every assignment I've had since I bought it and I'm learning even more; defiantly a book I want to read cover to cover.
