This is not a training guide, but a tool to understanding the e collar and its effect on your dog
I was a little disappointed when I got this guide and it wasn't as thick as I prepared for. But it is EXACTLY what I needed. I have a 14 month old pit who cannot focus around people even after expensive training courses I've taken with him and almost one year of training at home with him.I had been wary of using an e collar but was confident enough in his temperament that I purchased one but was afraid to start, even after watching a lot of videos. Especially since my dog understands his commands, he just doesn't always want to do them. This book is a quick reference to understanding how to use the collar. And the basic premise of the book is to help you incorporate it into your already existing training methods. The collar should not fear the dog into acting, it should simply be a reminder to the dog to perform the task given to them. There are do's and don't's. Basic rules as to how you should work up to working off leash. This was one of the biggest things I needed. Was glad to see it written out. He also mentions "act of God corrections" which is something else I needed to know that I'm glad he addressed, since I hadn't seen that mentioned in any sort of training video I watched. It's a handy guide and I'm glad I purchased it. It has given me more confidence in using the collar. Larry preaches building a connection between your dog and yourself, with the collar being an extension of that. The more you work with your dog and the collar, the more he is going to trust you and the more powerful your relationship is going to be.If you want a guide to fully training your dog from day one, DO NOT start here. If you have a semi trained dog that needs the extra help of an e collar to help he/she live a more enriched life, this is an amazing little tool that I would highly recommend purchasing.

A bit of a let down
Larry Krohn absolutely knows his stuff, and after watching some videos online of his training, I was excited that a book was offered because I prefer to be able to pick up a book and skip to the parts that interest me rather than watch long videos. I expected a bit more than the book delivered. It's not particularly well written or edited, and most of the book consists of case studies of specific problem dogs instead of instructions for using an e-collar to train basic obedience. I honestly only found a few pages of the book to be useful/helpful, and even those were a bit difficult tor read. Many of the case studies included are up on the author's blog on his website, so there really isn't a reason to buy this book if you have the internet. I think the potential of this book and trainer is huge, but Krohn's strength is in dog training, not writing, and I expected a more professional and polished presentation for a physical book. This appears to be self-published, contains no pictures or illustrations (there is one diagram), and the writing is pretty mediocre. A skilled editor would have made a critical difference here. While I like the author's training methods and he's a great advocate for dogs, I wouldn't recommend this book for the price and think you are better of sticking to the internet and YouTube videos.

Not useful- badly needs an editor
I was disappointed in this product. Instead of teaching you how to integrate the e-collar into training, most of the "book" (more of a bound print-out) describes how the author got interested in e-collar training and personal anecdotes about dogs (I didn't get the book to read about how the author's Rottweiler had cancer and died). When he does talk about training, he does not define terms (e.g., "place board", "dominant dog collar") or spell-out abbreviations (e.g., "pp training"). He has a few stories about working with specific dogs, which I assume are meant to teach, but are just personal stories without real substance (for example, he mentions his training of a dog was successful because the owners changed what they did at home, but then gives no information about what the owners did that made a difference).Additionally, the spelling errors, grammar errors, and incomplete sentences make this amateurish "book" a frustrating read.

Excellent
A great overall coverage of proper and humane use of a remote collar. I used to be one of those folks that hated the thought of using a "shock" collar on any dog. My experience was "comply or fry" and I hated that. I was able to talk to a gun dog owner that used ecollars differently. I watched him and his dogs happily working and that changed my opinion. I then soaked up as much knowledge as I could. The remote collar is the most humane training tool in my bag, because I was taught how to use it humanely. This book is a great resource to beginning the journey of remote collar usage. Thank you for writing this Larry. JJ

Decent intro into E-collar training
What I love about Larry Krohn's philosophy is that motivation and positive reinforcment should be used to teach behaviours, and that E-collars are layered in to ensure compliance once excellent foundations have been built. So many owners and "trainers" expect an e-collar to be a magical tool. E-collars will not make inadequate handlers any better, in fact it will make them worse. The first few chapters of the book provides a straightforward explanation on how to "condition" the dog to an e-collar so that they understand the meaning on a stimulation. The rest of the book I glanced over, as it had very little to do with how to use an e-collar and many anecdotes and unexplained claims. I would have appreciated much more behavioural science used with explanations, but I know Krohn isn't that sorta guy.Overall, a straight forward book but not the only resource I would consult before using an e-collar.

The Ecollar Guru - buy this before you buy an ecollar
Discovered Larry many years ago on a balanced dog forum. He ‘gets’ dogs and is an amazing trainer. This book gives insight into Larry’s life and past dogs. It dispels many myths about electronic collars, but for real jaw dropping stuff his YouTube channel is the place to actually see what he teaches in action. He’s right that the collar is like teaching your dog a new language - it gave me the confidence to use one on my dog in a positive communicative way. People who dismiss their use and think that ecollars are instruments of torture firstly need to understand Operant Conditioning, and secondly the fact there’s many rubbish ecollars out there being misused by people who don’t understand dogs! The modern sophisticated ones have many levels and settings, like the Mini Einstein I have. If you follow Larry’s guide you won’t go wrong and it will enhance the relationship you have with your dog.

Not nearly enough information.
I am a fan of the authors methods and watched many of his instructional videos which actually give more information than is in this book. He covers the basic here but not much beyond. The book is enough to get you started but left me with more questions than answers. The book basically teaches you how to condition your dog to respond to the collar in a general way but nothing more. It left me feeling very disappointed and cheated in that I have more questions than answers.

A brilliant concise book that tells you everything you need to ...
A brilliant concise book that tells you everything you need to know about high quality e-collars and the training stages. I would highly recommend this book for use in conjunction with a professionally qualified e-collar trainer. It has transformed my rescue wolfdogs lives and given them the freedom and joy of exploring the countryside they deserve. Only wish I had found this book sooner.
