Though I got this for my own collection, I have to say this would make an excellent gift for anyone with an interest in sundials, compasses, history, or antiquities. I really have nothing but good things to say about it.Of course the sundial compass combines two technologies: the sundial and the compass. One can use both elements of such an item to make a sundial that's portable and can be set up anywhere the sun casts a strong shadow. Though we now have modern technology that renders such a device largely obsolete, this is still a beautiful item to have in one's collection and is completely functional.I'm pleased to report that the compass does point to north, and the markings on the sundial are as accurate as my ability to test them. And everything folds up nicely for storage in the included felt-lined wooden box, making this a wonderful little self-contained item.A couple features I found particularly useful in this design are a small spirit level (or bubble level) built in to the base. It's small and unobtrusive enough that it doesn't affect the aesthetics at all and you might not even notice it if you're not looking for it. However, it's a very important piece because a sundial must be level in order to achieve an accurate reading. Similarly, in case you're working on an unlevel surface, the three legs on which the item rests are all height-adjustable, so you can always get it level and get accurate readings.In an item like this, the two things you really want are for it to be aesthetically pleasing and functional. I'm pleased to report that this one checks both of those boxes.

This appears handcrafted and is really interesting. It comes in a felt-lined inlaid wood box with a metal inscription plaque on the inside. I’m going to have to look up how to use the sun dial on it and all the other markings. The compass has a built in bubble level and all 3 leg stands adjust up or down in order to make sure its level. It was definitely pointing in the wrong direction at first. I put my phone compass app next to it and adjusted it and it the needle pointed in the same direction though there were some differences between the two. The I waved my hand over the compass and the needle started spinning in circles—OK, I’ll just say that’s probably something weird that happens around me (for years we’ve occasionally noticed electronics behaving weird just around me, so who knows?)So this is a really interesting novelty item and if you have any questions, there’s a card included with it that explains it is handmade and to call them directly if you have any questions—they appear to take pride in their work.****** I rely on unbiased customer reviews for my own purchases, so my reviews are always honest and fair.
