Hampton Nautical Solid Brass Gentlemen's Compass with Rosewood Box, 4", Brass

This is my very first product review ever and although i'm usually happy with the products I've bought, it was never enough persuade me to write a review until now. This compass is really beautiful, clean and functional. It came exactly on time as predicted and was very well packaged and undamaged. I was able to take it to be engraved with a quote I wrote (I got some of the words from several other inspirational quotes) for my wonderful boyfriend that loves to sail, as an anniversary gift: "There is nowhere to go but everywhere. Forever will pursue adventure with you in my heart to navigate the way." -Athena. In the end, he loved it a lot! <3

I purchased this for an anniversary gift, and was very pleased with it. It looks like it cost a lot more than it did, and arrived promptly. There was a little scuffing on the box and a tiny scratch on the side of the compass, but that only added too the antique feel of the item. I wouldn't use it for field work, but it is the perfect size to have a message inscribed inside and makes a lovely gift.

At a glance, this looks like an expensive piece. If you pick it up, you'll quickly notice that it's not the best quality, but it still looks great on display, which is the intended use.

The box is beautiful. It is not the sturdiest, but it presents well as a gift box. The compass came very well protected in multiple layers of bubble wrap. It is heavy, sturdy, and will make an excellent conversation piece. However, please note that this is not a camping compass. It is beautiful on a desk or self, but not suitable for using for directions. While the compass does work, it is not easy to read and the needle bounces a lot. The compass had a few small scratches in the finish, but it will still be a nice gift. Brass is not an easy metal to keep from dents and scratches. Overall, I am pleased with this item.

Not bad for the price, bought as a display gift for someone and he loved it. Beautiful piece for display.

Arrived broken and of poor quality. The inside marker was bent and would not point in the proper direction, which a lot of other people mentioned as well. The quality seems poor, and would not be good to use as a real compass.However, this might make a great toy for a young child interested in pirates or boats, and the surface of the compass leaves enough room for engraving in both sides. I would recommend this for someone looking for a realistic-looking toy or part of decor, but not as a usable compass.

I realize they aren't costing much, but these are absolute junk. Opened up the case and the hinge broke right off the compass body, and the glass and retainer ring were already popped out of the case. If I could give it zero stars, I would. The best thing about this item is the wooden box. I have no idea why Amazon allows this type of stuff on their site.

This piece is made just for show. Its beautiful, looks pricey and shiny but there was a scratch on the side that was very visible and the mechanism on the inside was bent so it didn't allow the arrow to spin correctly. I bought this for my grandfather who served in the Navy and loves collecting little things like this. I would have returned it with the scratch and the obvious malfunctioning arrow but it came packaged from the manufacturer (not the seller) and so it not being their fault I just gave it as is. He put it on his desk with his other naval trinkets.
