Quite simply one of the best modern classic tales for children of all ages: moving, funny, thoughtful and beautifully understated. Courtney, a dog who is more than he seems on the surface, is an archetypal under-rated hero with more talent and compassion than any may reasonably expect. The illustrations are insightful and warmly humorous, the story is told cleanly and with lots of space to talk about what might be happening to the child you are reading to along the way. The 'mysterious' ending is a touch of daring most people will not see coming and makes a great talking-point at home. God Bless you John Burningham. That it's very short and gorgeously illustrated makes it a story to turn back to again and again.

My Mum used to read this to me as a child and it was my favourite. I bought this for my Son for Christmas and he loves it too! A really good read and not to hard.

bought this as a christmas present for my mum, who loves John Burningham's illustrations. It was a doubly perfect present as Courtney the wonder-dog looks quite a lot like ours! She was very happy with it, and the story as well as the illustrations are quite charming
