can the valve be closed using the switch on the side

The 'Switch' on the side of the body is really an indicator to show if the valve is open or closed. You can however remove the body from the valve seat & turn it off or on manually carefully using pliers or grips. (There are you tube videos showing valve removal)

Are these a universal fit?

The ZA5 is designed to fit the appropriate Drayton 2 port valve only. It simply clips in place on top of the valve spindle.

Does this come with the brass compression joint, or just the switch?

This is just a head/ switch only. NPH plumbing

Are these a universal fit?

These actuators are made for Drayton valves only. Some British Gas branded motorised valves use Drayton parts.
