Unfortunately this model is not backwards compatible. I used to have the first generation ps3, the 80 gig model, which is backwards compatible.

The PlayStation 3 is an operating system in itself. You'll need to buy physical videogames to play on it. Or once you purchase the system you can purchase and download games to play on it. 120GB is not a lot of space for a game system.
