Great bass for the price!
This was my first acoustic bass purchase and it was a great choice! I was deciding between this model and the EABC model (which just has a cutout design). As I am not an experienced bass player I did not need to have access to the top most frets. This bass is perfect for practicing on your own or minor jam sessions. I recommend getting a decent bass amplifier if you are going to be playing with anyone with an electric instrument. The pickups sound naturally great, just works as it is supposed to. This bass has great tone! The bass came in great packaging and perfectly clean body. Make sure to get a gig bag! Dean has an EAB gig bag that I got additionally and it fits it perfectly but does not provide drop protection as it is a soft design. You might want to take it to your local guitar store to have the neck "set up" but I have been playing with it for weeks as shipped and in my opinion additional work it is not necessary.5 star product!ps, make sure to get a tuner!

In pursuit of writing a useful review on Amazon...
I don't write reviews often, and I'm doing this to sort out the inherent confusion otherwise known as "The Amazon Review Section"The Bass:For the price - The quality and sound of this bass is very good. I'm saying 'for the price' because people can't easily articulate the specific differences between a $170 dollar bass and a $600+ bass in a couple sentences. Why? It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and it's a lot of details that are easier to see and hear, rather than describe. You'll have to research it if that's what you're trying to determine (should I spend more money?). Go check them out in person first. Most players get into some really funky non-specific descriptions... Don't listen to those. If they're not using specific details, they're not providing relevant information. Yes - it is not a top of the line bass. That does not mean it's not good, it is great for what it is. It requires more research that I'm going to get into. The short story is that it has to do with EVERY detail. Quality of materials / construction, overall feel / play-ability, electronics, and finally tone. Yes, there are differences in tone, but it's not as drastic as you may imagine. There is also an element of personal preference. Plus - tone can be 90% on the player. I've heard some guys make cheap guitars scream. The bottom line is that a more expensive bass will not make you play better or sound better. You "may" have to make some adjustments, but it's not that big of a deal. If you've been playing for a while - it's very easy to do. Look it up online. My bass had no fret buzz straight out of the box. Don't take this review comment too seriously. It could be the guitar (needs minor adjustments) or it could be the player.Worst case scenario if you run into fret buzz. Take it to a local shop with a decent reputation and it could cost you $30 to $50 - IF, you're not comfortable with doing it yourself. I have also read that flat-wound strings help with the overall tone - which I agree with.I'm only giving this 4/5 because 5/5 would mean that it blew my mind all over my face it's so awesome. It is simply and accurately "very good".If you're new to bass - I highly recommend researching the music you want to play. It's a tough choice between a 4-string and a 5-string. Can you play the same things? Yes and no. You can, but obviously the instruments range is different. You can transcribe between a 4 and a 5 - but its kind of time consuming and annoying sometimes.BOTTOM LINE: The bass is good. You may have to send one back. You may have to make some minor adjustments. Think about whether you want a 4-string or a 5-string. A more expensive bass will not make you sound better. The Annoying:The guitars are not packaged well for transit (this goes for guitars in general). Guitars are exposed to high temperatures and humidity while in transit... In addition to the manhandling from UPS/USPS - you are running the risk of having to send one back. It's not a big deal, Amazon is very good about returning products. I recommend selecting "UPS Pickup" and you can just leave it outside the next day.*Note - A review of an item should never be based on your shipping experience. It should be about the item.

Quality not great.
Was a nice guitar and after reading reviews thought we'd give it a try. Although the price was good, the quality was not what we were looking for. Retuned the item.

it's not perfect. I read every review I could find
Okay, it's not perfect. I read every review I could find. Bottom line is, for the price, you can't do any better. It came with a slight bow in the neck, the truss rod was almost loose. Adjusted the tension, no buzzing, still perhaps a tad high on the action, but it plays fine and sounds good. The electronics sound good if you play it through any pedal that works as a pre-amp. I suggest a graphic equalizer. I also use reverb and compression pedals. You can bring out the low end and make it sound just like it does without amplification. I play it through a PA system. I've played the Martin and everything else out there, truth is the playability and sound are good on this bass. The neck seems a tad shifted so the spacing is less on the E than the G to the edge of the neck, but it doesn't affect how it plays. It's staying in tune and exceeds my expectations. If you're looking for an acoustic bass, decide what your expectations are. For me, it's recording, acoustic gigs and acoustic gatherings. Seriously, for $150 it's an incredible deal and has far exceeded my expectations. I've had no problems of any kind. I recommend this bass, regardless of your level of play.

Don't get a lemon
The neck was pulled up from the body, leaving a gap between the heel and the body as well as destroying all of the finish around the heel. The top was uneven, cracked, and splattered with glue. The electronics were floating around on the inside with sawdust. Even the upper frets are covered in dried glue for some reason. The box arrived in decent shape without any obvious damage so I can't blame the shippers. The quality control must be that bad.But not everything is terrible. Compared to other acoustic basses this thing is decently large and loud. The neck itself is smooth and straight. The frets are also pretty decent, I had no issues with sharp frets. If you can manage to get one without too many issues it's probably a good deal.
