Fire Steels perfectly sized for emergency kits and survival knives
Fire steels, or ferrocerium/Ferro rods, as they're also called, are a critical component of any serious emergency kit. The tool is indespensible fore starting a fire in difficult situations, especially wet environments.Although you can also use these for everyday use (I have a larger Ferro rod for starting my charcoal grill), their diminutive size is perfect for emergency kits. This particular brand pre-drills the tops for cordage. I used a key ring to make holding the fire stick more easily. You could also thread a length of fire cord through the hole, providing both a handle and inclusive tinder. Either way, the hole adds flexibility.I tested them extensively, and that work perfectly. I recommend practicing how to use them to make fire before you actually need them! For the best self-protection, carry an emergency kit with a small lighter, water/wind-proof matches, emergency tinder, and of course, a Ferro rod. This way, you have the best chance to survive a disaster. At this price point, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better product.

Real Ferro rod.
It came in a small box with six Ferro rods. Small compact size. Even a whole drilled into it for a lanyard or keychain.I used a carbon steel striker and it worked. This is a read functioning Ferro rod. Will buy again.

So far, so good
I've only used one to test so far. The sparks were big and hot. Tinder lit up quickly. For mini kits this seems great.ConNot the easiest to use at this size before a handle is attached. One of them was broken upon arrival, at the drill hole. Still usable, just a reminder they are fragile near the drill hole.I'll be ordering again

inexpensive, throws a big hot spark
Price is good and it taught me how to throw big hot sparks. Did I get a fire to light with it? No, but it taught me how to use these things and I have increased confidence in my ability to be "outdoorsy" if the world runs out of BIC lighters. I'm confident that if you have some good char cloth prepared you will be just fine with these, and that char cloth.

Handy little fire steels.
These are relatively small rods and can be a bit tough for some people to hold firmly, but is what was expected for this size. They throw good sparks and are convenient to keep with knife and small "bush kits". Lanyard hole is handy (I use a bit of tinder cord and can add a small scraper too for a much more reliable fire start).

great for EDC
put it on my keychain so it is always with me.not bulky, big enough to do the job.I wanted to have a fire starter with me at all times, along with a big folding knife and my pistol.that is really al that is needed to survive.
