Hi. Heat to max in oven, 250C for a hour. Take them off and put them onto a gas hob directly on the flame (full). 30 mins should be enough. I use an infra red heat thermometer to measure temp, and then them off when they reach 300 to 315C. Make sure you buy heat resistant gloves! Enjoy.

My oven only heats to 250 - if I leave it in oven longer, will the stone still work effectively?

Hi - If the oven heats only to 250C it will not heat the rock any hotter than 250C even if you leave it in for 8 hrs. So do what I do - I put the rock on a grill pan and rack and put it up high against the grill elements and the grill heats the rock just right. It is sizzling hot and produces a brilliant cook. Or pop the Black Rock Grill on gas or electric hob/stovetop. I hope that helps.

Can I light a fire directly under this stone?

One of the options to heat the rocks is on the gas cooker, which is an open flame. We recommend using a controllable heat source when doing this. Other options to heat the rock are; By placing in a cold oven & heat to 280C-300 Celcius / 550F-580 Fahrenheit for 60 minutes. If your oven does not reach the required temperature heat the rock on a Gas or Electric Hob / Stove at medium heat for 30mins to 40mins or under a grill for 40 mins with the rock close to the heating element.
