SSEYL UM6500 Handheld Digital Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Tester Meter

Rated 4 stars relative to the low price. A quality tester is at least 5-10x more expensive than this one so set your expectations accordingly and you won't be disappointed. I got good readings but note that the measured material must be flat and smooth. Will not work on curved surfaces without different probes. You'll need some couplant fluid to use this - it ships with a small bottle but mine was empty like it had evaporated or spilled. I used some Vaseline (yes it works for this too). The instructions are broken translation, but good enough to follow.

Resolution appears to be off by roughly 0.040" when measuring a 0.907" thick cast iron main bearing cap as a test before checking cylinder bore thickness of a Chevy small block. I've tried using all three iron settings, C02, C10, and C11, but C10 gives the closest reading of 0.866" with actual measurements of 0.907" on Mitutoyo digital calipers. I'm getting realistic numbers of around 0.266" for the cylinder bores but I can't trust that without the 5mm calibration block that should have come with the meter. It was missing when I opened the box and I was hoping to get around that, but can't seem to find a way to prove the deviation or accuracy of the reading. Also the little bottle of acoustic coupling agent is empty, and was never filed in China, so the factory is leaving out calibration blocks and acoustic coupling agent. You just got an empty bottle. Meaning folks in the factory just place an empty bottle in the case. As for the probe, it's too big to work really well on round surfaces with a bore of 4.155" but fit would improve if the bore is larger, and I'm still getting readings that are believable even though they are 0.040" too small at .907" thickness. The probe will work with a dab of coupling agent (I bought a separate tube just in case) and a steady hand. Deck thickness is showing somewhere around 0.560" which might be right. If I knew for sure, I'd change my rating because this is a cool meter for the money.

When set the tester on the proper code for the material that I was reading. The tester would not read. I followed the directions. I calibrated the tester. Put in the proper code. And tested a piece of cast iron and got zero. Then I tried again and again in different places on the cast iron. And still got a zero reading. So I turn the tester off then back on. The I tried again. Got nothing. I turn the tester off and removed the batteries. I reinstalled the batteries, recalibrate the tester. And it still wouldn’t read. I changed the code and tried the test on PVC and a piece of steel. And it still would not read. The only thing the tester would read. Is the calibration button on the tester itself. It would not read anything else.

Very accurate and it's a tool that used to cost machine shops thousands of dollars.
