Hi, I am not certain I am duplicating your question. Your body must be on the mat to receive benefit. If you you are using the mat to relieve pain then it would be best if you were using the mat in that particular area i.e. back, arm hips etc. It is actually the penetrating heat that will relieve the pain.Sincerely, Barbara
